Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: g. First edition. Small quarto. 160pp. Original stamped tan cloth. Rachel Wischnitzer (1885-1989) was a student of architecture and art having studied at the University of Heidelberg, the University of Munich, the School of Architecture at the Brussels Royal Academy, and the Ecole Speciale d'Architecture in Paris where she received a degree in architecture in 1907. She was one of the first three women in Europe to become an architect. In 1912, she married Mark Wischnitzer, a historian, in St. Petersburg. In 1920, they moved the family to London where Rachel became one of the first scholars to work with illuminated Hebrew manuscripts at the British Museum in London, and also in Oxford at the Bodleian Library. Later, her work in London led to publications in the field. The couple moved again to Berlin in 1921 where friends helped them found the journals Rimon [in Hebrew] and Milgroim [in Yiddish] of which Rachel was art and architecture editor. The journals were published from 1922 to 1924 and each included a section dedicated to art and literature. From 1928 to 1934 Rachel was the art and architecture editor for Encyclopedia Judaica (Berlin) and also served the Jewish Museum in many capacities, as well as curator, from 1928 to 1938. During this period she published her first book Gestalten Und Symbole Der Judischen Kunst [Forms and Symbols of Jewish Art]. The Wischnitzer's left Nazi Germany in the spring of 1938, and moved to Paris temporarily. In Paris, Rachel took a course with Comte Robert du Mesnil du Buisson, who excavated the Dura-Europos synagogue (built A.D. 244-245) in Syria, an experience that influenced the rest of her career. In 1940, the family moved again, this time to New York, where Rachel attended New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, completing her M.A. in 1944. During the same period she was research fellow at the American Academy for Jewish Research. Her master's thesis The Messianic Theme in the Paintings of the Dura Synagogue, published in 1948, and her following book Synagogue Architecture in the United States (1955) led to her final opus The Architecture of the European Synagogue (1964) and the founding of the fine arts department at the Stern College for Women in New York, where she remained until her retirement in 1968. Gestalten Und Symbole Der Judischen Kunst is the first work of its kind, prior to its publication there were no other works in German or English, other than catalogs, that showcased and illustrated Jewish art and architecture academically. Rachel Wischnitzer is responsible for establishing the discipline of Jewish art history and the profession. Color Illustrated frontispiece depicting a Jewish marriage contract [ketubah]. Illustrated throughout with b/w reproductions of sketches and photographs; one color photo reproduction from a machzor depicting a vision of the merkaba, and one color photo reproduction depicting women cleaning vessels, a rarely viewed scene from a 13/14th century Passover Haggadah. Overall good +.
