No Binding. Zustand: Good. James A. Seddon and Brigadier General John H. Winder. COMMUNICATION OF THE SECRETARY OF WAR. Confederate States of America, War Department, Richmond, Va., Jan. 27, 1864, [relative to the "domestic passport system" enforced upon citizens travelling in some parts of the Confederate States outside of the lines of the armies. Transmitted by] MESSAGE OF THE PRESIDENT, February 8, 1864. 9pp, paste-fastened pamphlet bearing the oval "Rebel Archives" stamp (legible with great difficulty), paste has left a blotchy stain, outer fold is split 3 inches, mildly toned, very good. Parrish & Willingham 2278. Seddon observes, citing a report by Winder, that this "report shows the manner in which the system was introduced into Richmond, and the causes which led to its further development in this city. In other cities and towns of the Confederacy, it has been under the control and direction of the military authorities, and its supervision has been, commonly, entrusted to provost marshals. Its development through the country was probably due to the proclamations for the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus, and the necessity of providing measures to restrain stragglers and deserters" Terminal page consists of a longish table of "Employees in the Provost Marshal and Passport Offices." Please email with questions or to request photos. This Confederate Imprint is one of more than 100 recently acquired, most with 'Rebel Archives' stamp on the cover, indicating that these were the actual copies seized by the Union Army at the end of the Civil War. A remarkable collection.

unbound. Zustand: very good. 1 page (front and back), 8.25 x 7.75 inches (torn from larger sheet), Richmond, Virginia, letter dated March 27, 1862. This note is signed by the Confederate Brigadier General who commanded prisoner-of-war camps throughout the South during the war. Signature is on the back of an appeal letter by a captain hoping to clear a soldier accused of disloyalty. From the letter: "This is to certify that Mr John Emmenhauser a resident of the city of Richmond Va. and who has been arrested and confined on the charge of disloyalty was a Sargeant in my company (K) 1st Regt. Va. Vols. and behaved himself very bravely in the engagements with the Enemy on July 8th & 21st 1861 and I have every reason to believe him to be a true southern man." Winder's note on the back says, "What is Emmenhauser arrested for Jon H. Winder B.G." Uneven edge on the bottom of the letter; browning along natural folds. Very good(-) condition. John Henry Winder was a career United States Army officer who served with distinction during the Mexican-American War. He later served as a Confederate general officer during the American Civil War. Winder commanded prisoner-of-war camps throughout the South during the war, and was charged with improperly supplying the prisoners in his charge.
