The Shambala, a Bantu-speaking people who live in the Usambara Mountains of North-Eastern Tanganyika, attracted the attention of many of the early travellers and missionaries who landed on the coasts of East Africa because of the sophisticated and elaborate political organization they possessed. The coastal regions of East Africa are in the main occupied by peoples with small-scale political units and thus the highly organized character of the Shambala state stood out in sharp contrast to them. The aim of this study is to provide an analytical description of the structure of this state and to consider the interplay between the segmentary lineage structure of Shambala kinship, the administrative bureaucracy, and the ideology of kinship which legitimizes the power of the royal clan. This royal clan holds a virtual monopoly of chiefly office and is internally ranked by virtue of descent position. The resulting hierarchy of lords and the retinues of councillors and retainers who follow them are reminiscent of feudal Europe. Illustrated. 180 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
