I propose that we turn to the Christian faith. I have therefore attempted to re-think such basic concepts of political science as state, constitution, civil rights, law, liberty, citizenship, and representation in the light of the Christian faith and to develop a more Christian conception of the proper relations between church and state. In attempting this task of intellectual reconstruction, I am addressing myself primarily to the believer. I want to point out to fellow Christians what I believe to be some of the political consequences of the religious convictions we share. The extent of my concern with non-Christians is not so much to argue against their positions as it is to give a positive and constructive answer to their frequently voiced question: What have you Christians got to offer besides criticism? This book is an expository, not an apologetic, work. In religion I am a Presbyterian Christian and an elder in the Presbyterian Church in the United States. I stand squarely on the Bible and the Westminster Confession of Faith, but I believe that there is a basic core of Christian doctrine and Christian life reaching back to the apostles and permeating the various Christian communions. I can therefore find myself at home in these other communions, including the Roman Catholic, even though I am convinced that this basic Christian core is purest in the evangelical Calvinist Reformed tradition.'
