The true first edition is known as the Shallowford Edition. Williamson had thirteen sets of proofs half-bound in morocco leather, in varying colours, which he presented to friends and associates. Being made up of proofs, these volumes have 312 pages, printed on one side only. The true first edition has a statement to this effect on the title-page.
