In den WarenkorbFirst edition, second impression, uncommon in the jacket. This work presents a profusely illustrated survey of Iraq's landscapes, peoples, and antiquities, with numerous views from the air. The authors are air commodore Ernest Leslie "Bill" Howard-Williams (1895-1969) and Sidney Agatha Anette Hay (1906-1999), the daughter of Major-General Charles John Bruce Hay, who served in Mesopotamia during the First World War. Their work emphasizes Iraq's strategic importance following the recent completion of the Iraq Petroleum Company's pipeline from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean and the RAF's role in defending it. The appendix makes the case for unfettered international flight, and the maps show the Imperial Airways Route, landing grounds, airports, and the IPC pipeline route and pumping stations, with both ancient and modern boundaries marked. Octavo. With frontispiece and 61 half-tone plates, 2 maps on one folding sheet. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover illustrated in gilt. With illustrated dust jacket. "W. H. Clancey", signature on front flap; "Modern" crossed out on front panel of jacket and replaced with "1936"; pencilled note on p. 36. Binding a touch rubbed and cocked, gilt oxidized, sporadic faint foxing; jacket flaps without price as issued, a little creased and chipped along extremities, spine toned, neat repairs to verso, minor remnants of old tape to spine ends and flaps (slight offsetting to pastedowns): a very good copy in like jacket.
