In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). A very scarce early edition of the sole play published by William Grimston, 1st Viscount Grimston, most copies of which he had bought up and destroyed. The second edition. Only copies presently found as early as this are held institutionally.Very scarce.Bound in quarter morocco paper covered boards. Bound with the half title and two final advertisement leaves. This play was seemingly the only published work of William Grimston, 1st Viscount Grimston (1684-1756), a British politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1710 and 1734.By the time he was raised to the Peerage of Ireland in 1719 he had fallen out with Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, who rejected his proposal that they should join interests at the next general election as 'insolent, saucy, and foolish'. Provoked by his refusal to support her grandson, John Spencer, at a by-selection for the borough, she once more co-operated with the corporation to oust him at the general election of 1734. Later that year he was pilloried by Pope in a couplet which referred to him as 'a booby Lord', in reference to this play which, upon its publication Grimston had endeavoured to suppress by buying up and destroying all copies of it.In 1736 it was reprinted with derisive notes and a frontispiece depicting a coroneted ass eating a thistle. The reprint was generally regarded as the Duchess"s revenge on Grimston for opposing her at St. Albans.ESTC No.T154608. Edition statement in black letter. ESTC notes identify a variant using roman type for edition statement.Register: [A4], B-K4.Collated, complete. Bound in quarter morocco paper covered boards. Contemporary endpapers.
