Le premier a fait date dans l'histoire de l'écologie animale : l'auteur y traite de l'influence des facteurs environnementaux sur la vie animale ; il relate ainsi de très nombreuses expériences sur les effets de l'air, l'eau, la température, la lumière et l'électricité sur la vie organique. Il contient une planche en lithographie représentant des vues microscopiques du muscle sterno-pubien de la grenouille. Dans le second ouvrage, non moins célèbre, Edwards se confronte à la théorie des "races historiques" établies en 1828 par l'historien Amédée Thierry dans l'Histoire des Gaulois ; il tente ainsi d'établir des relations entre physiologie et histoire en supposant que les principaux caractères physique d'un peuple peuvent se conserver à travers les siècles. Ce travail est considéré comme l'acte de naissance des théories raciales modernes (Marie-France Piguet, "Observation et histoire", L'Homme, 153 | 2000, 93-106). Fils d'un riche planteur anglais, Edwards est né en Jamaïque ; il déménagea avec sa famille à Bruges, où il effectua sa formation médicale.
