In den WarenkorbJ. Clin. Neurophysiology, 9/2. - New York, Raven Press, Ltd., 1992, 4°, pp.176-194, 13 Figs., self wrapper; with personal inscription "For Arthur Lyons". Rare Offprint! "In 1934. the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI)opened its doors. It was an interesting hybrid, unique in its time, a 50-bed hospital for patients with neurological disorders combined with a research center for the scientific study of the nervous system. Its founder, Wilder Penfield, had a background shaped by working in famous hospitals, such as Johns Hopkins. Peter Bent Bringham. The National (Queen Square), Columbia-Presbyterian, and by his studies or contacts with renowned medical figures that included Halsted, Cushing, Sherrington, Osler, Holmes, Greenfield, Cajal, Hortega, Foerster, and Whipple (Penfield. 1977; Lewis. 1981). Penfield's bent toward research was reinforced strongly by his exposure to Sherrington's course in physiology at Oxford. Two of his early publications, both appearing in Brain, described Golgi body changes (Penfield. 1920) after axonal damage and detailed the syndrome of experimental decerebrate rigidity (Bazett and Penfield. 1922). These reports exemplified the two main lines of interest that he would combine in his future career-the cellular pathology (Penfield. 1932c) and the disordered physiology of the human nervous system (Penfield. 1977; Eccles and Feindel. 1978; Feindel. 1987). Before moving from New York to Montreal in 1928 to take over neurosurgery at McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Penfield had visited many major medical centers in Europe. His judicious assessment of these noted that, in the few that were successful, neurology and neurosurgery worked closely together. He was particularly influenced by the example of Otfrid Foerster, an experienced neurologist who had become his own neurosurgeon. From Foerster. Penfield learned the technique of mapping out the sensory and motor cortical areas by electrical stimulation in order to resect mcningo-cerebral scars safely (Foerster and Penfield. 1930a,b). This approach was to serve as the groundwork for Penfield's lifelong dedication to the development of the surgical treatment and cure for focal epilepsy (Feindel. 1987; Preul and Feindel. 1991)." Feindel William Feindel (1918-2014) was a pioneering neurosurgeon and innovator in brain imagining writes to the well know neurosurgeon.
