Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - A workshop on Dynamic Aspects of Cerebral Edema was organized to pro vide an opport~nitY,for interdisciplinary and detailed consideration of this subject, so crucial in neurology and neurosurgery. The previ ous workshops were held in Vienna in 1965 and in Mainz in 1972. In the meantime, our ideas on mechanisms of resolution of cerebral edema had been changing drastically. Controversy had arisen regarding the role of biogenic amines in the development of edema. Active work in several centers had indicated the possibility of a reversible compo nent in edematous changes associated with ischemia, the control of which could be of therapeutic significance in the problem of stroke. It was felt that a thorough discussion, at this time, by those involv ed in these various studies should help to resolve the controversies, to crystallize the implications of the new findings, and to evaluate their application for patient care. In preparing the proceedings for publication we have edited the manu scripts and selected the discussions with an aim to highlight new find ings, to make this volume readable, and to eliminate duplication. We gratefully acknowledge financial support from the institutions and organizations previously listed. Many individuals contributed to the success of the workshop and the preparation of the proceedings for publication. Doctors J.B. Brierley, I. Klatzo, H.J. Reulen, and A.G.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Montreal, April 7, 1997. 4°. 1 Seite. Briefkopf "William Feindel OC. MDCM. Montreal Neursurgical Institute .". William Feindel (1918-2014) was a pioneering neurosurgeon and innovator in brain imagining writes to the well know neurosurgeon Arthur Lyons Obituary (1931-2023): "Dear Arthur, It was most pleasant to chat with you on the Osler Society Meeting about our mutual interest in medical history ." "In answer to your comment about Cushing and Penfield, I enclose a reprint of a paper which one of our neurosurgical residents worked up with me. We included in that a few of the index card's of Penfield's drawings of the Cushing surgical ritual. He adopted it quite fully in his surgical practice in New York and continued that when he came to Montreal" Enclosed we find the offprint mentioned by William Feindel: Preul, Mark C. & Feindel, William: Origin of Wider Penfield's surgical technique. The role of the "Cushing ritual" and influences from the European experience. J. Neurosurg. 75 (1991): pp.812-820, 8 Figs., orig. wrappers; with personal inscription "To Arthur Lyons, with warmest wishes, Bill Feindel".

J. Clin. Neurophysiology, 9/2. - New York, Raven Press, Ltd., 1992, 4°, pp.176-194, 13 Figs., self wrapper; with personal inscription "For Arthur Lyons". Rare Offprint! "In 1934. the Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI)opened its doors. It was an interesting hybrid, unique in its time, a 50-bed hospital for patients with neurological disorders combined with a research center for the scientific study of the nervous system. Its founder, Wilder Penfield, had a background shaped by working in famous hospitals, such as Johns Hopkins. Peter Bent Bringham. The National (Queen Square), Columbia-Presbyterian, and by his studies or contacts with renowned medical figures that included Halsted, Cushing, Sherrington, Osler, Holmes, Greenfield, Cajal, Hortega, Foerster, and Whipple (Penfield. 1977; Lewis. 1981). Penfield's bent toward research was reinforced strongly by his exposure to Sherrington's course in physiology at Oxford. Two of his early publications, both appearing in Brain, described Golgi body changes (Penfield. 1920) after axonal damage and detailed the syndrome of experimental decerebrate rigidity (Bazett and Penfield. 1922). These reports exemplified the two main lines of interest that he would combine in his future career-the cellular pathology (Penfield. 1932c) and the disordered physiology of the human nervous system (Penfield. 1977; Eccles and Feindel. 1978; Feindel. 1987). Before moving from New York to Montreal in 1928 to take over neurosurgery at McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Penfield had visited many major medical centers in Europe. His judicious assessment of these noted that, in the few that were successful, neurology and neurosurgery worked closely together. He was particularly influenced by the example of Otfrid Foerster, an experienced neurologist who had become his own neurosurgeon. From Foerster. Penfield learned the technique of mapping out the sensory and motor cortical areas by electrical stimulation in order to resect mcningo-cerebral scars safely (Foerster and Penfield. 1930a,b). This approach was to serve as the groundwork for Penfield's lifelong dedication to the development of the surgical treatment and cure for focal epilepsy (Feindel. 1987; Preul and Feindel. 1991)." Feindel William Feindel (1918-2014) was a pioneering neurosurgeon and innovator in brain imagining writes to the well know neurosurgeon.
