Cloth, G. xxiv+298pp, b/w frontis, attractive bevelled edge binding with deep blind stamped patterning, hinges weak, head of spine frayed, cloth rubbed, Ex Library with library numbers to the spine & occasional stamps inside, old library ticket [ with return dates of 1908 ], a good copy. The poetical works of James Beattie [1735 - 1803], a professor of Moral Philosophy who also wrote poems containing much beautiful descriptive writing. His most famous, the Minstrel, won him the favour of Johnson. Robert Blair, [1699 - 1746], Scottish poet wrote a single poem, The Grave, in blank verse. William Blake was inspired to produce 12 works to illustrate the poem. William Falconer [1732 - 1769], sailor & poet. His experience as a sailor helped him produce his most famous work 'The Shipwreck'. ironicaaly Flaconer was to die abourd the Aurora, which was lost with all hands of the Cape of Good Hope in 1769. 700 grams.

Somewhat worn contemporary dark brown full calf with raised bands, gilt spine, brown title label and marbled edges. Blind tooled framework with gilt lines on boards, gilt edges and dentelles. Skin slightly worn on top of the spine. A small label with an ink numbering on inside of front board. Nice copy. William Falconer (1732-69) was a Scottish sailor and had experienced a number of shipping accidents. "The shipwreck" was published first time in 1762 and was an imminent success. A second edition was published in 1764 and while Falconer was working on a third edition, he was commissioned a sought after position as a purser on the frigate Aurora which was bound for India 1769. It left Cape Town on December 27 and was never heard from.

Contemporary half green calf, red marbled boards heightened in gilt, five raised bands with gilt-tooled panel decoration to backstrip, red and black morocco label strips with title information in gilt to backstrip, marbled endpapers. Joints and corners of boards have some slight rubbing, lacks frontisportrait, minor foxing to outer margins; otherwise very good. Bookplate of Thomas Lee Marshall to first pastedown. § First edition thus, with a "Life of William Falconer" and a sonnet by Rev. John Mitford. The Aldine Poet Series was a 20 year project that involved printing new editions of classic British poets from Chaucer through to the 19th Century. They were published in 53 volumes during the years 1830-1844. Pickering secured John Mitford and Alexander Dyce as editors with Sir Harris Nicolas, so that the series would be of a high standard.
