Einzige Konstante darin: die in verlässlicher Regelmäßigkeit auftretenden Pausen, die dem Werk den Beinamen 'Pausensin…fonie' einbrachte. Verweigerten die Wiener Philharmoniker 1872 zunächst noch mit dem Verweis auf die Unspielbarkeit die Uraufführung der Sinfonie, konnte diese nur ein Jahr später unter dem Dirigat Bruckners einen ersten großen Erfolg verzeichnen.
