This is No. 335. Filled with 103 monochrome plates celebrating the etchings and engravings of 86 different British artists active from 1880-1930, including Sir Frank Short, Sir Frank Brangwyn, Alphonse Legros, William Strang, and Paul Drury. Includes frontispiece portrait of Short. Written by Sir Francis Newbolt, the work also includes a list of members. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, smart with dust-dulling limited to the spine, Gilding to the top edge still bright. The odd small mark to the boards. Slight bumping and rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. With ink inscription: "David Robinson to Gwyneth, January 28th 1944". Internally, pages are firmly bound, and generally bright and clean. The year to which the circular relates is meant to be added in manuscript, but has not been. Begins: 'The Committee appointed to choose the Fifty Books of the Year for [blank] will be grateful if, at your early convenience, you will submit such of your publications as seem to you most likely to be selected. I may perhaps remind you that the criteria by which judgment is made are | 1. TYPOGRAPHICAL DESIGN | 2. PAPER | 3. BINDING | 4. GENERAL IMPRESSION | 5. RELATION TO PRICE'. A 'condition of entry' is that 'one copy of any book selected is presented to the Club's file, and another copy lent for exhibition in America'. He concludes by stating that 'The Club is particularly anxious to encourage the better production of ordinary trade books', and asks for 'specimens of inexpensive productions' to be considered.
