Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. Dudley Gray (Photography) and Sheldon Gaylin (Auth (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. vi, [2], 344 pages. Signed and dated by previous owner on fep. The dust jacket is price-clipped and in a plastic sleeve. This extraordinary account of Selective Service violators who chose jail rather than deferment or exile is based on Dr. Gaylin's two-year research project intended originally as a scientific study. Willard Marvin Gaylin (February 23, 1925 December 30, 2022) was an American bioethicist and physician who served as a clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was also the co-founder, along with Daniel Callahan, of The Hastings Center, an independent research institute focused on bioethics. Gaylin served as the president of the Hastings Center from its inception, in 1969, until 1993 and as chairman of the board from 1993 to 1994. He was a member of the Center's board. From the dust jacket: Using psychoanalytic techniques he interviewed twenty-six white and black imprisoned war resisters to determine who they were, why they went to prison, and what effect it had on them. Of these interviews, which were taped to preserve an undistorted record, Dr. Gaylin writes: "When I started the project . I had no idea of publishing a book for the general reader. My interest was purely intellectual, not emotional. But then I had not met these young men. I had not seen the walls of a prison, I had not measured their brevity of time in which youth can be lost and hope abandoned. I came as an observer and left as a participant." Vietnam War resisters were individuals who opposed U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War (19651975) by refusing the military draft, deserting, or protesting while in uniform. Methods included claiming conscientious objector status, burning draft cards, fleeing to Canada, or going to prison, with resistance peaking due to moral objections and the war's high toll. The Draft and Conscientious Objectors: Between 1965 and 1970, many young men faced the decision to fight or resist. Thousands of draft resisters refused induction, while others sought legal, yet often denied, conscientious objector status. "The Resistance" Movement: Formed in 1967 by figures like David Harris, this group encouraged direct, public refusal to cooperate with the Selective Service System, aiming to clog the courts and prisons. Thousands of "draft dodgers" or deserters fled to Canada to avoid serving, often settling permanently. Resistance also grew within the military, including desertions, combat refusals, and the "fragging" (attacking) of officers. Veterans also protested, famously throwing medals at the U.S. Capitol. Resisters organized anti-war activities, including publishing underground newspapers and forming anti-war coffeehouses near military bases. Organizations like the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the War Resisters League (WRL) provided legal advice, counseling, and support for those resisting the draft. War Resisters League (WRL) was one of the organizers of the first U.S. demonstration against the Vietnam War in 1963. The resistance to the Vietnam War was significant, reflecting deep divisions in American society and contributing to the anti-war movement.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - When will the war finally come to an end Home Front: Viet Nam and Families at War recounts the private ordeals of several families who bore the brunt of America's war in Viet Nam. Their experiences, an ongoing tragedy since the last U.S. soldiers left Vietnamese soil, reveal the physical and psychological wounds of war --- wounds that don't discriminate between soldier and family. From the backwoods of Maine to the rugged wide open landscape of Montana, we meet a dozen soldiers and their families and hear their stories.Author Willard D. Gray knows the fallout firsthand. His oldest son spent two years and eighteen consecutive days in Viet Nam as a BAMC trained medic, most of his tour was served in the bush or in the gristmill of an evacuation hospital. When Willard's son returned home in April 1970 without an honorable discharge, the Gray family endured several months of tension, anger, and disappointment.Tommy Gray had come home a completely changed young man. Willard's crusade on behalf of his son soon grew to include others in the community who had also been traumatized and marginalized by the war. A national tragedy became a personal quest.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -The purpose of this book is to analyse and discuss the use of aerial or mapping perspective in Australian landscape imagery from 1945-2010. The growing awareness of American Abstract Expressionism in Australia in the 1950s saw a period of landscape painting and photography that changed the way artists worked with the landscape motif. This allowed a unique representation of landscape that was no longer an adaption of a European tradition. This fresh approach to an established genre of artistry was made possible by the flattening of the picture plane and the absence of linear and atmospheric perspective as notated in the 15th century by Leonardo Da Vinci, Filippo Brunelleschi, Leon Battista Alberti and others. My study of ancient and contemporary Aboriginal art, using a mapping viewpoint, prompted my investigation into non-indigenous artists who also used this method in their work between 1945-2010.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 92 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -In this book I examine the question as to how my creative work is informed and inspired by a sense of place through a political and historical engagement with the environment. This political engagement was created by my heartfelt desire to bring to the attention of local people the environmental threat that was being placed on two special historical areas where I live on the Southern Highlands of New South Wales, Australia. Of extreme importance was the need to protect this land, sacred to the Gundungurra Indigenous people, from development. The land in question was the early 19th century village of Bong Bong, the first European settlement on the Southern Highlands that contains both indigenous and early settlement artifacts. Through an engagement with the cultural/social history and current politics of the environment I have achieved a body of work that reflects a very personal ''sense of place''- a clear working process which translates well to the canvas and page. This book also contains photographs of my paintings and monotypes that are abstractions from this historic landscape.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 72 pp. Englisch.
