Brooke, also an author of a book on Somerset newspapers. A 1967 edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrated with 7 full-size illustrations and a folding chronological chart. Collated complete. This is an association copy, presented by Wiles to L. E. J. Brooke, who wrote the book Somerset Newspapers, 1725-1960. It is inscribed by the author to Brooke to the front free end paper. Loosely inserted is a letter, in which Wiles apologises to Brooke for the late arrival of this book and informs him of his latest ventures. Brooke's bookplate is adhered to the front paste down. R. M. Wiles was a professor of English and chairman of the Department of English at McMaster University in Canada, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. He wrote two other books on the history of journalism. In this volume, he focuses on the rapid development of early journalism which occurred between the reigns of Queen Anne and King George III, and in particular the historical details provided by the provincial press in the eighteenth century. In publisher's original cloth binding, with original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in excellent condition, though the gilt lettering to the spine is faded, and the spine itself is slanted. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, with just some spotting to the fore edge, affecting the occasional page. Dust wrapper is somewhat spotted, and sunned to the spine, but remains unchipped.
