Paperback. Zustand: Good. 348 pages ; 18 cm English The five plays originally published in one volume under the title "Plays", Penguin, 1954. Lady Windermere's fan -- A woman of no importance -- An ideal husband -- The importance of being earnest -- Salomé. Wilde was both a glittering wordsmith and a social outsider. His drama emerges out of these two perhaps contradictory identities, combining epigrammatic brilliance and shrewd social observation. This book includes Lady Windermere's Fan , Salome , A Woman of No Importance , An Ideal Husband , A Florentine Tragedy and The Importance of Being Earnest , which appears in full with the 'Grigsby' scene which originally made up the fourth act.

[Literature] CASTLE PRESS EDITION. Octavo (23 x 15cm), pp.63; [1]. Publisher's cream cloth with blue label and gilt lettering to spine, illustrated dust-jacket with printed price of 8s. 6d. to front flap. Illustrated endpapers, black and white in-text illustrations throughout. Strong smell of damp, light toning and minor spotting to edges of textblock, wearing to edges of jacket especially at spine. Very good. The Ballad of Reading Gaol is a poem by Oscar Wilde, written in exile in Berneval-le-Grand. Wilde had been incarcerated in Reading after 'gross indecency with other men' in 1895 and was sentenced to two years hard labour. Arguably, this is Wilde's most successful poem and was his last work before his death in 1900. The first publication of Reading Gaol was in 1898, but this illustrated edition is volume two in the Castle Press Editions of Oscar Wilde's Works.

8°, 22 pp., [4 pp.], 13 pp., original wrappers with red lettering (minor loss of paper around the spine, otherwise in a good condition). An intriguing ephemeral pamphlet is the first publication of Oscar Wilde's short stories The Happy Prince and The Selfish Giant in original language in Turkey. The text, accompanied with the Ottoman-French dictionary were published for the English-learning pupils of the Galatasaray Lycée by professor H. M. Thompson. Not much is known about Thompson, except that he was years before employed as a professor of English in the Don University, in Rostov-on-Don in Russia. In the introduction Thompson praises the interests of the Turks in English language, which developed in the previous years. This pamphlet was published as the first in a series of similar stories, yet it is not sure, if further issues were ever published. With the following year, the official alphabet in Turkey changed from Ottoman to Latin and such publications could not be used anymore for schooling purposes. The story The Happy Prince was entirely translated to Ottoman in the following year by Salih Zeki Aktay under the title Bahtiyar Prens. The pamphlet is very rare. We could not trace any other examples nor any other issues from this series.

8°, [8 pp.], 64 pp., with two black and white portraits of Oscar Wilde, original illustrated wrappers, bound in a recent black linen with gilt lettering and debossed decoration, signed by the translator (minor age-toning and staining, but overall in a good condition). The first Ottoman translation of The Happy Prince from 1928 was possibly inspired by the publication of the text in original language by H. M. Thompson at the Galatasaray Lycée in Istanbul a year before (please see our previous item). There are only two recorded translations of Oscar Wilde to the Ottoman language, the other one being Oskar Vayld'in Masallari (Oscar Wilde's Stories), translated by Saziye Berrin Kurt and published In 1927. Salih Zeki Aktay (1896-1971) was an Ottoman / Turkish author and translator, known for his fascination of old Greek texts and for his translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. We could not find any institutional examples on Worldcat. References: ÖZEGE 1597.
