Herausragend in seinem Schaffen sind die 1960er Jahre, als er die meisten seiner zu Ikonen avancierten Entwürfe fertigte und das Popdesign in Norwegen begründete.Dysthes Karriere begann glamour…ös: 1953 wurde der Student des Royal College of Art in London mit der Herstellung der Krönungsgabe der Schule, einer Holzschatulle, für Königin Elizabeth II. beauftragt. Seither ist er aus der internationalen Designszene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Seine Stuhl- und Möbelentwürfe 1001, Popcorn, Prisma, Planet und Laminette sind Exportschlager. Letzterer zählt durch seinen Einsatz in zahlreichen öffentlichen Gebäuden zu Norwegens populärsten Stühlen, auf dem zumindest jeder Norweger schon einmal virtuell Platz genommen hat; auf seinem Stuhl Gardist alle über den Osloer Flughafen Gardermoen Reisenden. Sven Ivar Dysthe hat darüber hinaus mit der Entwicklung einer revolutionären Ski-Bindung aus Kunststoff wesentlich zur Entwicklung der Skiausstattung in den 1970ern und den damaligen Erfolgen norwegischer Sportler beigetragen. Die Möbelentwürfe des preisgekrönten Designers Sven Ivar Dysthe sind heute so populär wie zur Zeit ihres Entwurfes und sichern ihm einen herausragenden Platz in der skandinavischen Designgeschichte.
