(n.b., quote from the biography by his son, Paul Whitfield, "A World of My Own"). Having only dipped briefly into this story, we were charmed and wanted to keep reading; as set forth in Pertelote, "When we received the manuscript.we all felt that it was one of the most enchanting love-stories of its kind we had ever read: it had freshness, sensibility, imagination, and emotion." This GCP publication with five full-page illustrations by Dorothea Paul Braby (1909-1987), who studied art under John Farleigh and Noel Rooke, as well as in Florence and Paris. This was the first Golden Cockerel Press book for which she would provide the artwork, followed by many others, including their "Mabinogion". Loosely laid in is the prospectus, a single sheet folded to four pages, the front being a mirror of the title page, the inside pages a specimen plate and page, usual information on the last page. ___CONDITION: Volume near fine, the morocco shelfback smooth and supple, the boards clean other than a few light, stray spots, the corners very gently bumped without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; sunning to the backstrip and the top edge, light offsetting to the pastedowns from the leather turn-ins, and light offsetting from the illustrations to the opposite pages.
