Fred Whipple worked for many years at the Harvard College Observatory and became the director of the Smithsonian Institution Astrophysical Observatory in Cambridge in 1955. Whipple introduced the "dirty-snowbank-comet model of the structure of comets which became axiomatic in the field of cometary research. Jesse Greenstein pioneered in opening a variety of new subjects in astrophysics, and was a leader in the development of radio astronomy in the United States, as well as the discovery and interpretation of the quasi-stellar radio sources. Greenstein graduated with a Ph.D. from Harvard in 1937, and turned his attention to radio astronomy. His most important contribution in the field came in 1964, with the discovery of the quasi-stellar radio sources, the most luminous - and enigmatic - objects in our universe.…
