Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. MICHAEL WHELAN (illustrator). It has been two years since the starship Phoenix left Alpha Station on a rescue mission where over four thousand human spacers were under attack by a hostile alien race. Now, exhausted from their journey, the crew of the Phoenix yearns for home. But when the ship makes the jump into atevi space, they learn the worst: that supplies to the station have been cut off; that civil war has broken out on the atevi mainland; that the powerful Western Association has been overthrown; and that Tabini-aiji, Bren Cameron's primary supporter and Ilisidi's grandson and ally, is missing and may be dead. With no one left to lead the Western Association, Ilisidi and Bren know that the survival of their allies lies in their hands. And with the atevi world at war, the only safe landing strip lies on the human colony at Mospheira. Although there are many dangers inherent in bringing a powerful atevi leader such as Ilisidi onto human lands, Bren realizes they have no other choice. But even if they safely survive their landing, will Bren and Ilisidi together prove strong enough to muster the remaining shards of the Western Association and regain control of their planet? The long-running Foreigner series can also be enjoyed by more casual genre readers in sub-trilogy installments. Destroyer is the 7th Foreigner novel. It is also the 1st book in the third subtrilogy. A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact.
Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. MICHAEL WHELAN (illustrator). It has been nearly ten years since the starship Phoenix returned to Alpha, the station orbiting the world of the atevi, which had been abandoned following a rift between a faction of the station's inhabitants and the spacers' Pilot's Guild. The unexpected return of the Phoenix has forever changed the lives of both atevi and Mospheirans, for over the ensuing decade, the captains of the Phoenix have brought both species into space. Their motivation seemed simple: Reunion Station, a human station in another sector of space, had been destroyed by aliens. But on his deathbed, the senior captain of the Phoenix admits that he lied to the crew that Reunion was merely damaged, not destroyed, and many people may have survived. At this disclosure, the crew rebels and forces the Phoenix to undertake a rescue mission to Reunion. Onboard the rescue mission are Bren Cameron, brilliant human paidhi representing the atevi ruler Tabini-aiji, and Tabini's grandmother Ilisidi, a fearsome and ambitious atevi leader with an agenda of her own. Trapped in a distant star system with little fuel left, facing a bellicose alien ship, how can Bren help to avoid interspecies war when the notoriously secretive Pilot's Guild aboard Reunion Station refuse to cooperate, and may have kept the inhabitants of their own station ignorant of their true situation? The long-running Foreigner series can also be enjoyed by more casual genre readers in sub-trilogy installments. Explorer is the 6th Foreigner novel, and the 3rd book in the second subtrilogy. A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact.
Soft cover. Zustand: Fine. No Jacket. MICHAEL WHELAN (illustrator). Foreigner is essentially a first contact story about aliens landing on a planet and having to learn to deal with its inhabitants. The big twist is that we're the aliens. A human colony ship got lost in space after a bad hyperspace jump. The first two sections of Foreigner fast-forward through their journey, their arrival in the new system, the horrific challenges they face as they realize there is no way home. These two sections only account for about one seventh of the novel (about 60 of my paperback's 420 or so pages) and should probably be considered something like a prologue to the entire series, because it's only afterwards that the real story gets started. Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. MICHAEL WHELAN (illustrator). The Gates were relics of a lost era. The Union Science Bureau surmised that they had once linked a whole network of civilizations throughout the galaxy-an empire ruled by a ruthless race known as the qhal. This qhal empire had spanned both Space and Time, for their Gates warped time, enabling qhal travelers to step from point to point across light-years unaged. It was even possible to travel into the future. However, intervention in backtime could affect entire worlds and civilizations, could change the course of galactic history, could destroy empires and possibly even implode time itself.and this was what the Science Bureau believed had happened-sometime, somewhere in the unreachable past, an arrogant power-drunk qhal had done the unthinkable, and warped the very fabric of space and time. Morgaine: pale in coloring and as tall as the tallest men, it seems clear that this mysterious traveler is a descendent of the long-vanished qhal. Aided by a single warrior honor-bound to serve her, it is her mission to travel from world to world sealing the ancient Gates whose very existence threatens the integrity of the universe. But will she have the power to follow her quest to its eventual conclusion-to the Ultimate Gate or the end of time itself? A copy that has been read, but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact, and the cover is intact.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. H.R. Giger, Michael Whelan, Lee Brown Coye, Virgil Finlay, Gahan Wilson, John Coulthart, Ian Miller, Bob Eggleton, Mike Mignola, J.K. Potter, John Jude Palencar, and others (illustrator). 1st Edition. Large Folio (30.5 × 39 cm). Full black cloth. Cover decorated with tentacle pattern in blind; gilt titling to cover and spine. Pictorial dustjacket. Black cloth slipcase. Two silk ribbon markers (black and yellow). 400 pp. Colour and black and white illustrations throughout; numerous multi-page fold-outs, including Michael Whelan's Lovecraft Diptych, here approximately four feet wide. Profusely illustrated with over forty artists' work spanning eight decades of Lovecraftian art. Over 20,000 words of original essays. Standard slipcase edition. Published October 2008. Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) was born in Providence, Rhode Island, published almost exclusively in pulp magazines, never achieved commercial success during his lifetime, and died at forty-six in poverty. His reputation has been assembled entirely posthumously. He is now regarded as the most influential writer of weird fiction of the twentieth century. Particularly, his central creation is that of a mythology of cosmic horror whose central proposition is that the universe is incomprehensibly vast and incomprehensible that to merely gaze upon it would cause irreparable psychic damage to the human mind, leading to madness. The Cthulhu Mythos, a loose constellation of ancient beings, forbidden books, and doomed New England communities that recurs across his fiction, has exerted an influence on horror literature, film, visual art, and popular culture that has lingered for almost a century now. The Lovecraft Retrospective draws on the full range of artistic responses to Lovecraft's work over the previous eight decades; presenting the accumulated visual imagination that Lovecraft's fiction has generated across a century of continuous creative response. The artists assembled here represent the full spectrum of that tradition: Virgil Finlay and Lee Brown Coye from the golden age of pulp illustration; H.R. Giger, whose biomechanical imagery connects the cosmic horror tradition to the mainstream of late twentieth-century visual culture; Ian Miller, John Coulthart, and J.K. Potter, whose intensely detailed graphic work has defined contemporary Lovecraftian illustration; Michael Whelan, Bob Eggleton, and John Jude Palencar from the world of science fiction and fantasy painting; Mike Mignola, whose Hellboy universe owes a clear debt to Lovecraft's mythology; and Gahan Wilson, whose cartoonish yet deeply unsettling approach to the material is entirely its own. For most of the art, Walters worked from either originals or first-generation transparencies, so most of the work is displayed with a brilliance that has never been seen in reproduction before. The framing essays are provided by three figures of exceptional authority. Harlan Ellison (1934-2018) contributed the introduction. Stuart Gordon (1947-2020), the director of Re-Animator (1985) and From Beyond (1986), who did more than any other filmmaker to bring Lovecraft's work to the screen, wrote the preface. Thomas Ligotti (b. 1953), the American horror author widely regarded as the most significant writer in the Lovecraftian tradition since Lovecraft himself, provided the afterword. Centipede Press was founded by Jerad Walters in Lakewood, Colorado, initially as Cocytus Press in 2001 and renamed in 2004. It has established itself as the foremost specialty publisher of fine limited editions in the horror, science fiction, and weird fiction genres, with a particular emphasis on the Lovecraft tradition. Fine. A beautifully preserved copy, free from imperfections. Slipcase shows some shelf markings. Please note: This is a large and heavy volume. Additional postage costs may apply. If so, we will contact you after purchase.
