This collaborative history was begun by Robert Watson (ca.17301781), Scottish minister and academic, but edited and completed by William Thomson (1746-1817) after Watson's death. The publication of this work established Thomson's literary reputation, and he went on to publish numerous pamphlets, biographies, memoirs, and treatises. The weak King Philip III of Spain (ruled 1598 -1621) may seem a rather uninteresting historical subject, but his significance lies in the fact that Spain's decline as a world power began in his reign.

These volumes were praised by the likes of Horace Walpole, and went through several publications, reaching the seventh edition by 1812.Watson was working on the delineation of the reign of Philip the Third when he died, and the work was completed by William Thomson and was originally published in 1783. Thomson grew in popularity with this work.The History of the Reign of Philip the Second, this edition was published in 1794. With William Muir's bookplate to the front pastedown to each volume, as well as a minor previous owner's inscription to the front pastedown of volume one, undated. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the first and last few leaves, and the odd minor spot tot he occasional leaf; otherwise, the pages are generally bright and clean. Good. book.

Complete three volumes for the earlier monarch, and complete in two for the latter, with the last volume written by William Thomson, the works are an extensive and definitive history of these rulers. Hugely significant to Spanish and European history, Philip II was notable for his marriage to Queen Mary I and for the Spanish Armada, whilst his son is known for his various failings as a statesman, was famously noted as a "undistinguished and insignificant man". Here, historians and academics Robert Watson and William Thomson look back upon their rule and the consequences of them. In half-calf binding with gilt detailing and paper-covered boards. Externally sound, there is some wear to the boards, joints, extremities and backstrip, with some minor loss of paper and leather to boards and backstrips respectively, as well as sunning to backstrips. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound, with some strain, and there are instances of spotting throughout, although the text is unaffected. Good. book.

This is the complete work of this history, with the original four books by Robert Watson and the continuation of two books by William Thomson. Watson's work was first published in 1777 with Thomson's continuation completing the work first issued in 1783. Robert Watson was a Scottish minister and academic. He was Principal of St Salvator's College in St Andrews. Horace Walpole praised his work as a historian and in particular his historical work on Philip II. William Thomson was also a Scottish minister, historian and miscellaneous writer. His bibliography is extensive with many historical and travel works. His reputation as a writer was made with this continuation of Watson's work on Philip III. Philip III of Spain was king of both Spain and Portugal. He was a Hapsburg and had a largely negative political reputation abroad. He ruled the Spanish Empire at its height and brought Spain into the Thirty Years' War. In full calf bindings. Externally, very smart with some minor rubbing to the head and tail of spine as well as to raised bands. Some minor rubbing to joints also. Bookplate of John Colby with the Colby family crest to front pastedown of both volumes. Internally, both volumes are firmly bound. Small section from the top margin of both title pages removed neatly, possibly to remove a prior owner's signature. Pages are generally bright with some slight age toning to edges and the odd spot throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.
