Copley on… the front paste-down, his sale, Sotheby's New York "Magnificent American, Historical Documents", 10th May 2011, lot 1059. First edition thus, limited issue, one of 550 copies printed. Translated from the original documents by Watson, Thomas Workman Temple II, and Frederick J. Teggart, and including the "diario" of Miguel Costanso, who kept a record of the journey to Monterey and its occupation in June of 1770. Together these three documents "tell of Spain's final attempt to spread her culture and dominion in the Western Hemisphere; a culmination of centuries of effort rather than an isolated historical event. they form a capstone of priceless worth to an historic pyramid built up of adventure and romance, victory and defeat, exploration and travel, and the strife and warfare of nations and religions through the ages" (Introduction).
