Extrait. Zustand: Gut. p. 80-87. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author to W. Haase. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good. - From the text: Derow observes that intercalation in alternate odd-numbered consular years, together with exactly one extraordinary sequence of three successive intercalary years, can account exactly for the days between the known astronomical synchronisms of 14 March 190 and 21 June 168. The intercalations within this period attested for 189, 177 and 170, probable for 175 do fit this pattern. Derow's tabulation of equivalent dates is a conveniently tempting tool, especially inasmuch as he claims "what appears to be contrary evidence must be specially sought out and examined. In the end, as will be seen, everything does square .". Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Examining sites that are familiar to many modern tourists, Valerie Warrior avoids imposing a modern perspective on the topic by using the testimony of the ancient Romans to describe traditional Roman religion. The ancient testimony recreates the social and historical contexts in which Roman religion was practised. It shows, for example, how, when confronted with a foreign cult, official traditional religion accepted the new cult with suitable modifications. Basic difficulties, however, arose with regard to the monotheism of the Jews and Christianity. Carefully integrated with the text are visual representations of divination, prayer, and sacrifice as depicted on monuments, coins, and inscriptions from public buildings and homes throughout the Roman world. Also included are epitaphs and humble votive offerings that illustrate the piety of individuals, and that reveal the prevalence of magic and the occult in the spiritual lives of the ancient Romans.

24 cm, Original brochure. Zustand: Gut. 118 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication by the author to Prof. Haase. - A very good copy. - From the preface: Less than two years after peace had been made with Carthage, the Roman people voted for war with Philip V of Macedon and sent a consular army across the Adriatic to begin the conflict known as the Second Macedonian War, an action that ultimately led to Roman domination of the eastern Mediterranean. That Livy, our fullest extant source, saw this war as a major turning point in the history of Rome is indicated by his placement of the beginning of the war in the opening chapters of the first book of the fourth decad and by an elaborate preface (L. 31.1.1-10). From a modern perspective, however, the ensuing narrative gives an initial impression of incoherence or even outright confusion. Livy offers little direct comment on the actions he is relating, his apparent technique being to lead the reader to interpret events for himself as the narrative unfolds. The initiation of Rome's first major military involvement in the eastern Mediterranean has thus become one of the most controversial topics in Greco-Roman history. Different interpretations have arisen because Livy's narrative techniques and the overall design of his work are frequently overlooked. Scholars have their own specialized interests, often focusing on political and military history to the exclusion of religious matters which can be an important indicator of contemporary concerns. This fragmentation of scholarship has resulted in the distortion, if not the destruction, of the integrity of Livy's original composition and thus of his implied interpretation of the events that culminated in the Roman invasion of Greece.
