In November 1897, twenty-three-year-old Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi arrived at the Royal Needles Hotel on the Isle of Wight to conduct his wireless experiments. The hotel proprietors welcomed his proposal to rent rooms during the winter months. Using funds from his new…ly formed Wireless Telegraph & Signal Company, Marconi converted the billiard room into a workspace, installing his equipment and a spark transmitter. He hired small ships equipped with wireless aerials and receivers, and a 168-foot mast was erected at the hotel with the help of local men. On December 6, 1897, Marconi began his wireless experiments, including private demonstrations for Queen Victoria and the Royal family at Osborne House and on the Royal Yacht. For the next two and a half years, the world's first permanent wireless station operated from the Isle of Wight. By 1900, seeking more space and privacy, Marconi relocated his equipment to Knowles Farm in Niton, where he developed the science of tuning, allowing multiple wireless signals to be separated without interference. In January 1901, transmissions from Niton reached Lizard Point in Cornwall, a record 196 miles away, paving the way for transatlantic communication. This young engineer's experiments on a small island laid the foundation for modern global communication, radio broadcasting, mobile phones, and the internet, forever changing the world.

[Illegible signature.]". "2MT was the first British radio station to make regular entertainment broadcasts, and the 'world's first regular wireless broadcast' for entertainment. Transmissions began on 14 February 1922 from an ex-Army hut next to the Marconi laboratories at Writtle, near Chelmsford in Essex. "Two Emma Toc (as it was called in the British Army Signalling Corps spelling alphabet of the day) was a surprising success. The presenter, producer, actor-manager and writer were Captain Peter P. Eckersley (1892-1963), a Marconi engineer. His regular announcement: "This is Two Emma Toc, Writtle testing, Writtle testing", became in a short time quite well known. "2MT led to the creation of its sister station, 2LO, and subsequently, the BBC. It then follows those same engineers for the next… five years, and details their early experimental broadcasts from the Marconi New Street works that included the famous 1920 broadcast by Dame Nellie Melba. The Marconi engineers then created the 2MT Writtle station. Its sparkling success led the same engineers to design and then build the BBC, starting in 1923. This then is the story of those amazing times. It is aimed at a wide readership, not just lovers of historic or technical tomes. The book does include separate technical/historical appendices on the Writtle, Chelmsford and 2LO transmitters, the Dutch station PCGG, Belgian station OTL and even the village of Writtle itself. The book also looks at the work of many early pioneers who tried to make broadcasting happen even sooner, including Grindell Matthews, Mahlon Loomis, Reginald Fessenden and David Hughes. It includes an overview of the explosion in radio broadcasting in America along with a detailed Glossary and Appendices on all aspects of the new science of radio. With over 200 photographs, it draws on over 25 years of research and includes much previously unpublished archive material.
