The author acknowledged the help with the manuscript provided by Captain Chester W. Nimitz, Jr. and Heinrich Heep. Captain (later Admiral Joseph B. Icenhower was the author. Joseph Bryan Icenhower (1913-1994) commanded a submarine during WWII. On 25 Oct 1944 USS Jallao (Lt.Cdr. J.B. Icenhower) torpedoed and sank the Japanese light cruiser Tama east of Luzon Strait. On 11 Aug 1945 USS Jallao (Lt.Cdr. J.B. Icenhower) torpedoed and sank the Japanese merchant cargo ship Teihoku Maru in the Sea of Japan. Mildred Waltrip (1911-2004) was an American artist and illustrator. Waltrip suffered from polio during her lifetime, and wore leg braces. She received her art education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Waltrip took part in the Works Progress Administration's art program, completing the murals World Map and People and American Characters in 1938 at the Hatch Elementary School in Oak Park, Chicago. In 1995 the murals were removed, as they portrayed Africans stereotypically, "carrying spears, wearing loincloths and sporting prominent red lips," according to a Chicago Tribune article by Joanne von Alroth. The removed murals were placed in storage. By the mid 1950s she was illustrating children's books, including Molecules Today and Tomorrow and Research Adventures for Young Scientists. This provides a brief history of the submarine is included in this description of the vessel's unique features and operation. Also discusses nuclear submarines and their present and future potential. A submarine (or sub) is a watercraft capable of independent operation underwater. It differs from a submersible, which has more limited underwater capability. The term is also sometimes used historically or colloquially to refer to remotely operated vehicles and robots, as well as medium-sized or smaller vessels, such as the midget submarine and the wet sub. Submarines are referred to as boats rather than ships irrespective of their size. Submarines encompass a wide range of types and capabilities. They include small autonomous examples using A-Navigation and one- or two-person subs that operate for a few hours, to vessels that can remain submerged for six monthsâ"such as the Russian Typhoon class, the biggest submarines ever built. Submarines can work at greater depths than are survivable or practical for human divers. Franklin Watts (1904-1978) was the publisher of books for children and adults for more than 36 years. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Waltrip, Mildred (illustrator). Neuware - A republication of the 1958 book by Irene Sevrey with illustrations by Mildred Waltrip, The First Book of the Earth is an elementary level natural history book that was written during a time when children's books held a student's interest and imagination because they were 'living' rather than simply based on factoids and vivid pictures. It is a wonderful introduction to the subject of geology and covers the earth as a planet in the solar system and the physics of how it circles the sun, thereby defining our days and years. It then moves on to describing the earth's origin as scientists understand it and takes up the topics of the earth's composition, its structure, molecular makeup, rock families, minerals, volcanoes and earthquakes, mountains and their formation, and how glaciers and rivers affect the shaping of the earth's surface. The book ends by briefly discussing dinosaurs and the possible aging techniques used to date the earth's age in terms of epochs or periods.
