Recent quarter calf over cloth, endpapers renewed. Negligible light rubbing to extremities, recent owner bookplate (of J.M.B. Light toning to text, light soiling to title page, verso of final leaf, and margins of a few other leaves. $400. * Second edition, one of two issues from 1716. This title was originally the second part of Hale's History and Analysis of the Common Law of England (1713). It was then published separately in 1713 and went through several later editions as an independent work. (Its third edition was also issued with the third edition of the History). Blackstone's Commentaries holds the Analysis and History in high regard; Holdsworth, speaking of Hale's scholarship, praises his "very wide knowledge of both the legal and historical literature," "historical perspective" and "complete mastery of the law of his own day," which "enables him to detect the remote origins of the important doctrines of later law, to give the history of those doctrines their due weight, and thus, even when dealing with remote periods, to avoid unprofitable antiquarianism.": History of English Law VI:586-587. Recent period-style polished calf, blind rules and fillets to boards, gilt and blind fillets and lettering piece to spine, endpapers renewed. A few negligible scratches to boards, recent penciled annotation to front free endpaper. Light toning to interior, more moderate in places, light foxing in a few places, early ownership signature ("[illegible] Digby") to head of title page. A nice copy of a rare title. $1,500. * Walthoe was a leading law bookseller in late-seventeenth and early eighteenth-century London. Arranged alphabetically by topic and based largely on the pioneering seventeenth-century catalogues of fellow bookseller Thomas Bassett, this catalogue lists books printed for Walthoe and titles he carries in stock or can acquire for clients. The final page is a brief list of non-legal titles, including The Compleat Horseman Abridg'd and The Gentleman's Dictionary. Including the present title, Walthoe published six catalogues between 1714 and 1731. All are quite scarce. [ii], xvii [i.e. x…v], [3], 505, [51] pp. Copperplate pictorial frontispiece, engraved added title page. Octavo (9" x 5-1/2"; 22.86 x 13.97 cm). Early twentieth-century, morocco, gilt fillets to boards, raised bands, gilt title and gilt ornaments to spine, gilt tooling to board edges, gilt inside dentelles, marbled endpapers. A few minor scuffs and nicks to boards, light rubbing to extremities, tiny chip to head of spine, hinges starting, crack in text block between title page and following leaf. Moderate toning, light foxing to a few leaves. An attractive copy. $750. * Eighth edition. For many years this was the standard treatise on international, commercial and maritime law. It went through many editions, the first in 1676, the last in 1778. A Spanish translation was published in 1793. "It was not until 1676 that a man, who had some claims to be called an English lawyer, wrote upon [maritime law]. Charles Molloy who was both a civilian and a member of Lincoln's Inn and Gray's Inn, in the second book of his very successful treatise, De Jure Maritimo et Navali, gives us some account of these branches of the law" (Holdsworth). It deals with international as well as maritime and commercial law. Chapters III and IV discuss Privateers and Piracy. The main theme of the frontispiece is law as a protector of maritime commerce mediated. She is seated between war and peace; cargo stands in the foreground while ships sail peacefully in the background. The title page features Britannia seated before an image of a British victory against a Dutch fleet. (This plate commemorates the Third Anglo-Dutch War, 1672-1674, which was won by the British navy.)
