Since few systems are subject to as diverse a spectrum of disorders as is the nervous system, their depiction poses a challenge. We have attempted to present the reader with a concise description of diseases, coupled with a variety of figures in such a way as to leave a lasting mental picture. The selection of figures was a satisfying experience; however, given the practical limitation posed by the publisher's need to produce a useful atlas at an affordable price, as well as the wealth of available material, the selection process required making "hard choices." We have endeavored to achieve a reasonable balance between surgical and medical neuropathology, but Chapter 3, dealing with neoplasms and related lesions involving the central and peripheral nervous system, is heavily represented. However, given the nature of the beast, this is where the action is for practicing pathologists- the quick and accurate recognition of a lesion. In additon to the figures, this Chapter provides a rather expanded text and abundant References. The latter were carefully selected in order to amplify the text, and include classic descriptive and clinical works. Allotting the remaining space to other, primarily medical entities posed a greater problem. Those selected are, in large part, common conditions with which every clinician should be familiar, but also include lesions considered esoteric but which fall within the realm of "necessary vocabulary" for practicing neurologists or neurosurgeons. In consideration of the audience, this work is intended primarily to aid in diagnosis and is thus clinically oriented; it is not encyclopedic, and the approach is practical. No effort has been made to touch upon therapeutics or to keep abreast of rapid advances made in molecular biology or in our biochemical understanding of these conditions. Initially, we had hoped to closely correlate gross pathologic photographs with images generated by modern computerized imaging techniques. In view of the limitation of spaces and of the rapid improvement in neuroimaging, we have only selectively utilized this approach and have (with an apology to radiologists) concentrated upon "real pictures" rather than "shadows." As younger generations will have fewer opportunities to see unmolested (from the pathologists' selfish perspective) brain tumors and other important surgical and medical conditions at autopsy, we hope our approach will prove to be of lasting value."
