Perhaps there was a time when authors could take it for granted that their readers were thoroughly familiar with the Bible, but most of us today will be glad to have help in recognizing and understanding many of the biblical allusions common in our language and literature. W. B. Fulghum has chosen over 300 of the more frequently used allusions -including words, phrases, people, and places. For each allusion he gives pronunciation when necessary, location in the Bible, other relevant biblical passages, and important examples to be found in English and American authors. There are also some references to biblical words and phrases used by writers who are not conscious of the origin of the words and do not intend a specific allusion. The King James translation of the Bible has been used, not only because it is the supreme literary version of the Bible in English, but also because most English and American authors since 1611 have employed it. Where other translations are used such as probably the Wycliffe and the Vulgate for Chaucer, the Bishops' and Geneva Bible for Shakespeare, or the Douay for many Catholic writers note is made of any significant differences. Because of the many biblical sub- jects in painting, sculpture, and music, Professor Fulghum's guide will be invaluable to lovers of the fine arts. Its immense usefulness to writers, students of literature and theology- and, indeed, to everyone who wants to read with understanding should make A Dictionary of Biblical Allu- sions in English Literature a standard work in home and library. Professor W. B. Fulghum is Chairman of the English Department at Central Connecticut State College. He is a graduate of the University of Michi- gan, and received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He taught at Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern, and Stephens College before coming to his present post. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
