Softcover. Zustand: Very Good. Unknown edition. Quarto. Single bifolium with a single sheet insert making four pages. Pages have been trimmed on all sides (perhaps to fit into a smaller piano bench or a smaller album) not affecting any content, notched and worn along the fold from once being bound within an album, heavy foxing and toning throughout, a small stain at the bottom of the front cover affecting the verso, and separating a bit at the ends of the fold, still a very good copy. For voice and piano. *OCLC* locates five holdings and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade.

First Indian Reprint "To write a geographical, statistical and historical account of a vast country like India is very difficult indeed. But this memorable work of Hamilton has been described as an excellent effort to reduce the Geography of Hindostan to a more systematic form than has yet been attempted in any prior publication. After the establishment of British Government, Hindostan was partitioned into certain large territorial divisions. This arrangement has been explained in the Introduction. The changed modified distribution of territories made it all the more necessary to write an authentic description of India. With this object Walter Hamilton wrote this work of distinction. For the first series the author selected Bengal, not only because it contains the modern metropolis and seat of the Supreme Government, but also on account of the superior importance of the materials from which its description is composed. The other provinces follow in succession according to contiguity. The map prefixed to this work exhibits the large geographical divisions, but being constructed on so small a scale, it was found impossible to distinguish either the petty native states, or the different districts into which the British provinces have been partitioned. A primary object of the present publication having been to combine facility of reference with the connecxion necessary to adapt it for regular persual, a copius index of the names of places is given at the conclusion. This work was first published in 1820 in two Volumes running in well over 1600 pages. Since then times have been changed. India is an independent democracy now. But the DESCRIPTION OF HINDOSTAN has not lost its relevancy and is very often consulted by eminent scholars and students of History and Geography. To cater to the demand of such a vast readership, Walter Hamilton's work has now been reprinted." - INTRODUCTION -- A general Description of Hindustan - The Province of - Bengal - Bahar - Allahabad - Oude - Agra - Delhi - Lahore - Cashmere - Ajmeer - Mooltan - Cutch - Gujerat - Malwah - THE DECCAN - The Province of - Gundwana - Orissa - The Northern Circars - Khandesh - Berar - Beeder - Hyderabad - Aurungabad - Bejapoor - INDIA SOUTH OF THE KRISHNA RIVER - The Province of - Canara - Malabar - Cochin - Travancore - The Balaghaut Ceded Districts - Mysore - Coimbatoor - Salem and Barramahal - The Carnatic - THE ISLAND OF CEYLON - NORTHERN HINDOSTAN - The Country between the Sutuleje and Jumna - Gurwal or Serinagur - Kumaon - The Dominions of Nepaul - The Sikkim Domains - COUNTRIES ADJACENT TO HINDUSTAN - Baloochistan - Afghanistan - Tibet - Bootan - Assam - States adjacent to Assam - Ava and the Birman Empire - INDEX - GLOSSARY - LIST OF AUTHORITIES - ADDENDUM - List of Governors General, &c Buchreihe: Band 1 und 2 komplett Seitenanzahl: 1591 Seiten Format: ca. 19 x 25 Leinen Englisch.

First edition, quarto issue, first impression, second state of p. 3 (beginning "May rise" in line 2); 4to, pp. ix, [3], 122 [i.e., 128], [2] ads; original blue-gray paper-covered boards, printed paper label on spine; corners worn, small cracks and some rubbing, but on the whole a very good, sound copy. This follows the privately printed edition of 50 copies by several days. Todd & Bowden 59Ab: "To 'strengthen' a rather slim performance, typographically, one or more of the early gatherings were usually printed on heavier paper [as here] . Because of the belated insertion of a second, half-sheet (H) there is a repetition of numbered pages 68-69 resulting in the misnumbering of all subsequent pages.".
