My original design had involved research in the writings of all European countries and in America. As the extent of Plutarch's influence unfolded, however, it became necessary to limit the scope of the study to chief literary figures of the major European literatures. Initial focus on the eighteenth century had already established a chronological limitation comprising the Age of Reason and Enlightenment. As the study progressed, I modified its character somewhat by including aspects of pre-Romanticism as manifested in literary productions in the world of ideas of the Enlightenment period. The modification became necessary in view of the strength of the movement and the magnitude of Plutarch's influence. I define major European literatures as those of France, England, Germany, and Italy. By the term chief literary figures, I mean those writers who have been so adjudged in the crucible of time, and whose work best reflects the prevailing climate of ideas.
