This is why the North Rhine-Westphalia Science and Research Ministry came up with the plan to work out a well-founded scientific basis on which to solve the problems inherent in our transport system. A research network has been established and sponsored with government funds for a period of three years with a view to realising that objective. The 'Traffic Simulation and Environmental Impact' research network is composed of researchers who have an excellent reputation as North Rhine-Westphalia traffic experts. Cutting across various disciplines of knowledge, the network aims to integrate transportation and natural sciences, particularly physics and mathematics, in a move to profit by the synergy between technical know-how and innovative methodology. The present volume is intended as a progress report and a prologue to the forthcoming international colloquium which represents the highlight and at the same time the end of the three-year project funding period.

Die Anteile werden immer größer und der Trend hält, getrieben von steigenden Kunden- und Umweltanforderungen, ungebremst an. Bald wird der Wertanteil der Elektronik am Gesamtfahrzeug bei 20 Prozent liegen. Nahezu alle Funktionen des Fahrzeugs werden heute elektronisch gesteuert, geregelt oder überwacht. Ausgehend von den physikalisch/technischen Grundlagen der Elektronik und Bauelemente werden Funktion und Anwendung von Komponenten und Systemen in Motor und Fahrwerk in Bordnetz, Fahrerassistenzsystemen, Infotainment und Multimedia gezeigt. Zwar gehen die einzelnen Kapitel nicht sehr in die Tiefe, jedoch gewährt das Buch einen Einblick in die Einsatzmöglichkeiten und Realisierung bestehender Systeme im Fahrzeugbereich. Für jene die sich in die Materie einarbeiten möchten stellt es ein sehr gutes Sammelwerk dar, auf konkrete Realisierungen wird seltener eingegangen. Trotzdem finde ich das Buch sehr empfehlenswert es hilft bei weiteren Recherchen und beschreibt einfach und verständlich die eingesetzten Systeme und Wirkungsweisen. Das Buch deckt eine breite Spanne von Themen ab und eignet sich sowohl zum zwanglosen Blättern als auch zum Nachschlagen. Die Inhalte sind aktuell, auch neue Technologien wie Brennstoffzellen finden Berücksichtigung. Einziger Nachteil: Es ist nicht aus einem Guss, die einzelnen Beiträge der Autoren hätten besser aufeinander abgestimmt sein können. Der Preis könnte auch etwas studentenfreundlicher sein, dafür bekommt man allerdings auch ein gutes, solide gebundenes Buch.
