Contains stories by Rex Stout (The Zero Clue (Scared to Death) earlier published in the novella collection Three Men Out), John D MacDonald (Funny the Way Things Work Out), Edgar Wallace (The Ghost of John Holling), Victor Canning (Through the Wall), Leo Tolstoy (The Expense of Justice), and others. Light edge and overall wear to the covers. There is a 4" closed tear to the top right spine hinge and a .625" one towards the lower part of the left one with an associated flap. .875" chip at the top of the spine is laid in. The major flaw is the binding has split at page 30/31 and pages 31 - 162 have separated. All pages are present. A filler with stories by two prominent mystery writers.

Combining approaches drawn from linguistics, Roman history, and Latin literature, the chapters share a common purpose of attempting to assess how Lucilius' satires functioned in the social environment in which they were created and originally read. Particular areas of focus include audiences for satire, the mixing of varieties of Latin in the satires, and relationships with other second-century genres, including comedy, epic, and oratory. Lucilius' satires emerged at a time when Rome's new status as an imperial power and its absorption of influences from the Greek world were shaping Roman identity. With this in mind the book provides new perspectives on the foundational identification of satire with what it means to be Roman and satire's unique status as 'wholly ours' tota nostra among Latin literary genres.

Along with "The Sheik" later the same year, the film the catapulted Rudolph Valentino to stardom and helped create his "Great Lover" image. The film also launched the career of director Rex Ingram, made screenwriter June Mathis one of the most powerful woman in Hollywood, inspired a tango craze, and was the first to gross over $1,000,000 at the box office. 10 x 8 inches.
