Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: No DJ present. Format is approximately 6.25 inches by 9.5 inches. xi,[1], 587, [1] pages. Occasional footnotes. Illustrations. Index. Illustrated endpapers. Cover has substantial wear and soiling. This third edition was believed by the authors to be better than the earlier editions in two important ways. First the organization and handling of precepts and principles are clearer, sharper, and pedagogically firmer than they were in the former editions. Secondly, the author believe they have achieved more comprehensiveness, more consistency, and greater strength in the theoretical argument--the philosophy of rhetoric, so to speak, which supports the instruction. Dr. Bryant of the University of Iowa was a giant in the field of Rhetoric in the mid-Twentieth century. The National Communication Association has managed the Karl R. Wallace Award, which was established by Mrs. Wallace and the family of the late distinguished rhetorical scholar, and is given to foster and promote philosophical, historical, or critical scholarship in rhetoric and public discourse. The award is presented to scholars who have completed the Ph.D. within the past 10 years or who are well advanced in doctoral studies in rhetoric and public address. Wallace's chief academic interests were in Francis Bacon, especially as a theorist, but also as a practitioner; and in classical rhetorical theory. His professional impact was a product of his commitment to both pedagogy and the development of the teacher of rhetoric. This was when the field was undergoing great change. He contributed substantially to the refinement of contemporary rhetorical theory. Public speaking, also called oratory or oration, has traditionally meant the act of speaking face to face to a live audience. Today it includes any form of speaking (formally and informally) to an audience, including pre-recorded speech delivered over great distance by means of technology. Confucius, one of many scholars associated with public speaking, once taught that if a speech was considered to be a good speech, it would impact the individuals' lives whether they listened to it directly or not. His idea was that the words and actions of someone of power can influence the world. Public speaking is used for many different purposes, but usually as some mixture of teaching, persuasion, or entertaining. Each of these calls upon slightly different approaches and techniques. Public speaking was developed as a primary sphere of knowledge in Greece and Rome, where prominent thinkers codified it as a central part of rhetoric. Today, the art of public speaking has been transformed by newly available technology such as videoconferencing, multimedia presentations, and other nontraditional forms. Third Edition [stated] Presumed first printing thus.
