Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. 100% of profits go to charity, we are all volunteers. This gently-used volume has very few signs of wear although there are some margin notes (written by my grandmother, a missionary from the Congo). The DJ has some minor tears from shelving. It…is in giftable condition and is quite an interesting book. It is a compilation of the Lonkundo stories and fables, lovingly translated into English. A rare find for a sociaologist, anthropologist, or linguist who wants to learn more about the people of Zaire.

Known as "the Prohibition Portia," she was responsible for enforcing the Volstead Act during the Prohibition era. During the 1928 presidential election, Willebrandt organized several high-profile raids of speakeasies, all to benefit the election prospects of Hoover. The press noted that "no other woman has ever had so much influence on a presidential campaign." Willebrandt expected to be named Attorney General for her loyalty to President Hoover, but she was passed over and soon resigned. The first edition of The Inside of Prohibition by the former Assistant Attorney General, Mabel Walker Willebrandt. (illustrator).

First edition, first printing, of this account of prohibition by one of its chief enforcers. Mabel Willebrandt (1889-1963) was the Assistant Attorney General from 1921 to 1929, the highest-ranking woman in the federal government during that time. "Faced with smuggling, bootleggers, conniving local politicians, incompetent federa…l enforcement units, and public indifference, she became known in the press as 'Prohibition Portia' and sought public support through lectures and magazine articles. Her division averaged more than fifty thousand prosecutions annually, winning highly publicized cases against the 'Savannah Four', the 'Mobile Six', and the 'king of the Bootleggers', George Remus. The division also won appeals of the padlocking of New York speakeasies. Willebrandt herself argued more than forty cases before the Supreme Court and presented cases in federal district courts when congressmen or local political figures were on trial. As public support withered, however, she admitted feeling like the boy who stood with his finger in the dike, adding, 'I've prevented floods of wrong things, but it's a wearing way to be a hero'. She summed up her frustrations in The Inside of Prohibition (1929)" (ANB). During the 1928 presidential election, Willebrandt organized several high-profile raids of speakeasies, all to benefit the election prospects of Hoover - one newspaper noted that "no other woman has ever had so much influence on a presidential campaign" (The Fresno Morning Republican, 20 October 1928). Willebrandt expected to be named Attorney General for her loyalty to President Hoover, but she was passed over and soon resigned. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Unclipped jackets with minor short closed tears with discreet repairs: a fine copy in very good jacket.

dj. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (20.5cm); evergreen cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine and front cover; dustjacket; [iv],[8],9-347,[1]pp. Small, faint dampstain to upper left corner of rear cover, else a fresh, very Near Fine copy. Dustjacket is price-clipped, showing light wear, mild dust-soil, a few small te…ars and creases, and a corresponding faint dampstain to upper rear flap fold; Very Good+. Lengthy volume by the former assistant attorney general for the Justice Department, responsible for enforcing the Volstead Act from 1921-1929. "She worked closely with both the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and the Anti-Saloon League to build public support for the federal efforts. She also used liquor prosecutions to generate headlines. A number of times, Willebrandt sat in the courtroom while one of her assistants pressed a case. Since women government lawyers were quite a novelty in the 1920s, her actions generated press coverage. Similarly, she focused much of her action on corruption cases that grew out of the violation of prohibition, again headline grabbers. She did not seek press notice gratuitously, but as a part of a Justice Department campaign to showcase prohibition enforcement activity and to make a case to the public for cleaner government. Willebrandt published, first in syndicated newspaper column form and then as a book (The Inside of Prohibition), her vision for effective prohibition law enforcement. She called for clean government, greater coordination between national and local officials, and especially for common people to take responsibility for seeing the laws enforced" (Badr, Jehad and Mark Weir. "Prohibition's Portia: Mabel Walker Willebrandt." online resource). An attractive copy, uncommon in commerce.
