His talent was discovered while writing home about his own experiences as a soldier in the Crimean War. Internally very good; small dedication to second flyleaf and recipients bookplate to paste down; illustrated with twelve plates[all present] and a map; binding sound; no foxing; dark blue end papers; all edges green; ix + 401 pp + 32 pp adverts. A very sound copy dated 1897 to title page whereas the true first is by Blackie and dated 1898. The apparent discrepancy is due to the fact that Scribner dated their copies for the current year whereas Blackie dated their first edition for the forthcoming year.
