The People of the Black Circle is one of the original novellas centered on Conan, the legendary Cimmerian barbarian. First serialized in Weird Tales magazine across three issues (September, October, and November 1934), the story is set in the mythical Hyborian Age. It follows Conan as he kidnaps the royal princess of Vendhya (a fantastical version of ancient India) and thwarts the dark ambitions of the Black Seers of Yimsha, who aim for world domination. Noted for its expansive scope and unique Indian-inspired setting, this tale is regarded as a classic of Conan lore. Howard scholars frequently praise it as one of Robert E. Howard's best works. Moreover, the story offers a rare, nuanced exploration of magic and sorcery, moving beyond the typical Hyborian portrayal of wizards as mere demon-summoning, illusion-casting priests.
