In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: VG-Fine. R.W. Matthews (illustrator). 1st thus. 61+(2)(Index), 14 plates, 7 being coloured + 12 text figs; sm.sig. & stamp of Department of Plastic Surgery, Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Ayelsbury top fr.free endpaper, sm.nick to outer edge of this also, otherwise internally clean, tight & unmarked in clean unworn blue covers; jacket is a blank paper wrapper, generally clean bar a few spots but top edge frayed/chipped. Chris Stringer, the Natural History Museum's world expert on neanderthals gives this the thumbs down as a genuine Neanderthal skull: "It's certainly a rugose skull, though the overall face and vault shape is modern. Its robusticity is like that of a few large moderns such as from Polynesia or Tierra del Fuego and perhaps the apparent pathology lies behind some of this. But I think it's a curiosity rather than something genuinely 'Neanderthaloid' " (pers.comm.). Greig had no provenance for it, having received it from another medic who had in turn inherited it. The coloured plates are really excellent. David Middleton Greig (1864-1936) was a very eminent Scottish anatomist and osteopathologist (as well as much else) and was at this late stage of his career Conservator of the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
