'Godsdienst, onderwijs en wetenschap hielpen Gabriel Italie door de oorlog heen. De Haagse leraar hield een dagboek bij, ook over zijn verblijf in Westerbork en Theresienstadt. Deze kroniek is nu in boekvorm verschenen en boeit van begin tot eind, vindt Eildert Mulder. Op 26 februari 1941 noteert de Haagse leraar klassieke talen Gabriel Italie dat hij is ontslagen. Hij behoort voortaan tot de categorie ?ontheven Joden? (.) Italie hield vanaf 1935 tot 1951 een dagboek bij, in de oorlogsjaren van 1940 tot 1945 vrijwel dagelijks. Italie, zijn vrouw Rose en twee van zijn drie kinderen overleefden de oorlog. (.) Het dagboek is niet literair maar boeit van begin tot eind, ruim zeshonderd bladzijden. Deze kroniek is zo suggestief dat de lezer het eigen perspectief van de kennis achteraf verliest. Wanneer Italie in 1941 zijn wachtgelden berekent, gemakkelijk aan te vullen met bijlessen, ben je ook als lezer opgelucht, terwijl je weet hoe betekenisloos die informatie is. Later speelt de kennis achteraf juist wel een rol, bijvoorbeeld als Italie ontdekt dat de invasie in Normandië is begonnen. Hij is dolblij maar als lezer denk je: man, hoe komen jullie dat laatste oorlogsjaar door? Het blijft overigens een raadsel hoe Italie zijn dagboek veilig naar Barneveld, Westerbork en Theresienstadt kon smokkelen. Hij schrijft voorzichtig. Nooit voert hij iemand sprekend op, zelfs geen gezinsleden. Dat lijkt egocentrisch maar hij bereikt ermee dat het dagboek, als iemand het mocht vinden, alleen belastend zal zijn voor hemzelf. (.) De dreiging is elke bladzij voelbaar, toch lijkt het lang te duren voordat Italie beseft of wil toegeven dat het om leven en dood gaat. Wel stelt hij bedroefd vast dat de negentiende-eeuwse Joodse emancipatie verloren gaat. (.) Godsdienst, onderwijs en wetenschap houden hem mentaal overeind. Ze creëren een vast dagpatroon. Ook in Barneveld en Westerbork geeft hij les. Bij de Bijbel en de Griekse klassieken zoekt hij steun. (.) In 1947 geeft hij zijn oorlogsdagboek aan het Rijksinstituut voor oorlogsdocumentatie (Riod, tegenwoordig Niod). Wally de Lang kwam het toevallig tegen, toen ze een boek schreef over het Joodse Lyceum in Den Haag: ?Slotakkoord der kinderjaren? (.) Italie stierf in 1956. Hij werd zestig. Behalve zijn oudste zoon verloor hij ook zijn drie broers, zijn enige zuster en al zijn oomzeggers van die kant. Hij stortte zich op de wetenschap, tussen 1945 en 1956 bracht hij acht boeken uit over klassieke Griekse schrijvers. Dat vele werk combineerde hij met zijn leraarschap klassieke talen aan het Haagse Maerlant-Lyceum. Zijn laatste boek, Index Aeschyleus, droeg hij op aan zijn vermoorde zoon Paul. In het Latijn citeert hij de aartsvader Jacob, die in Genesis 37:35 zegt: 'Ik zal rouw dragen totdat ik naar mijn zoon in het dodenrijk afdaal.' (ELDERT MULDER, 24.10.2009 in Trouw).
