Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. You may know W. Kamau Bell from his new, Emmy-nominated hit show on CNN, United Shades of America. Or maybe you've read about him in the New York Times, which called him "the most promising new talent in political comedy in many years." Or maybe from The New Yorker, fawning over his brand of humor writing: "Bell's gimmick is intersectional progressivism: he treats racial, gay, and women's issues as inseparable." After all this love and praise, it's time for the next step: a book. The Awkward Thoughts of W. Kamau Bell is a humorous, well-informed take on the world today, tackling a wide range of issues, such as race relations; fatherhood; the state of law enforcement today; comedians and superheroes; right-wing politics; left-wing politics; failure; his interracial marriage; white men; his up-bringing by very strong-willed, race-conscious, yet ideologically opposite parents; his early days struggling to find his comedic voice, then his later days struggling to find his comedic voice; why he never seemed to fit in with the Black comedy scene . . . or the white comedy scene; how he was a Black nerd way before that became a thing; how it took his wife and an East Bay lesbian to teach him that racism and sexism often walk hand in hand; and much, much more. …

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. As Alida mixes bread dough in her small kitchen, she listens to the radio with incredulity. The Trump administration has just come to power in Washington, and America's most fundamental values and traditions are in danger. Her dog Buddy--a policy wonk--is equally outraged. If Congress is unwilling to act, who will protect American democracy? The answer lies in Alida's mixing bowl, for she is making sourdough bread, and the yeast (collected from the air in her Philadelphia kitchen) turns out to be extraordinary. Meet John Dough, superhero, and learn how he comes to the aid of a troubled and divided nation. The action unfolds in Philadelphia PA, Iowa, Washington D.C., and the Land of the Plant People, where the inhabitants are proud to live Free from the Bonds of Reason. Pennsylvania history both inspires and horrifies our hero John, who is educated by the well-read Alida, her politically savvy dog, and a sympathetic and scholarly pigeon at Thirtieth Street Station. Thirty-six illustrations range from touching to darkly satirical. This is a funny book about important ideas. Readers will laugh aloud, cry, and adjust their ideas about American history. …

Paperback. Zustand: Good. In 1987 Bernard W. Bell published The Afro-American Novel and Its Tradition, a comprehensive interpretive history of more than 150 novels written by African Americans from 1853 to 1983. The book won the Distinguished Scholarship Award of the College Language Association and was reprinted five times. Now Bell has produced a new volume that serves as a sequel and companion to the earlier work, expanding the coverage to 2001. Bell also refines and extends his interpretive model for reading texts by African American writers, a model based on the vernacular forms of expression of his childhood, the literary theories of Ralph Ellison, and the writings on double-consciousness of W. E. B. Du Bois. T he book begins with a personal essay in which Bell traces the evolution of his thinking about sociohistorical and sociocultural approaches to literature. He goes on to apply these approaches to the work of hundreds of black novelists whose work has been published since 1853. His primary focus, however, is on some forty novels and romances published between 1983 and 2001, including works by Gayl Jones, Toni Cade Bambara, Toni Morrison, Paule Marshall, Albert Murray, Gloria Naylor, Al Young, David Bradley, Leon Forrest, and Charles Johnson, as well as the neo-Black Aesthetic novelists Nathaniel Mackey, Trey Ellis, Percival L. Everett, and Colson Whitehead. In acknowledging the diversity of the tradition of the novel, Bell also examines the science fiction of Samuel Delany and Octavia Butler, the gay novels of E. Lynn Harris, Larry Duplechan, and Randall Kenan, and the detective narratives of Barbara Neely and Walter Mosley. The result is a book of impressive scope and accomplishment - an essential work for any serious student of African American literature.…
