In-12 - 13,5 x 8 cm. 9 feuillets, 102 pages paginées, 132 pages paginées, 96 pages paginées. Reliure de l'époque en plein veau marbré, dos lisse richement orné, pièce d…e titre en maroquin bordeaux, filet doré sur les coupes, tranches marbrées. L'ouvrage est en trois parties, chacune avec un titre, une pagination et une foliotation propres : 1° Les Nouveaux Oracles ; 2° Le Curieux traité de la physionomie ; 3° Traité des songes et visions nocturnes, avec leurs significations selon la doctrine des Anciens. Exemplaire orné d'un frontispice gravé montrant une Roue de la fortune qui constitue la clef pour l'interprétation de cet ensemble d'horoscopes dédié « aux dames ». L'épître dédicatoire précise qu'il s'agit d'un jeu de salon et « qu'il ne faut ajouter aucune foi à ces oracles, qui sont trompeurs et incertains et qui par conséquent ne doivent contenter ni fâcher personne et qu'on doit prendre plutôt pour s'amuser et pour se divertir en compagnie. »Provenance : ex-libris "Le Bibliophobe Bechtel" encollé sur le premier contre-plat. Bibliophile de longue date, Guy Bechtel constitua une fort conséquente bibliothèque consacrée aux Sciences occultes, dispersée à Drouot en novembre 1978. Notre exemplaire est le numéro 399 de cette vente et le catalogue indique que "d'après Dorbon (n°5221), le frontispice (réparé) est ajouté. Il signale 2 p. non chiffrées à la fin qui doivent être les 2 p. "Avis au lecteur" reliées après le titre et non signalées dans sa collation". Sur la page de garde, on notera également la présence d'un ex-dono "G. Chardin", d'une notice qui qualifie l'ouvrage de "rare et curieux [.] peu commun", et d'une note manuscrite au crayon. Étrange édition dont nous n'avons trouvé aucune trace dans les différentes bibliographies que nous avons consultées. Berthelot XI, 1035 ; Barbier III, 1034 ; Larousse XV, 1232 ; Caillet III, 11539. Reliure aux coiffes arasées, aux mors fendus en tête et pied et aux coins émoussés, une ancienne restauration visible mais marginale en pied du frontispice. Modeste mais rare exemplaire avec une intéressante provenance.

Marc Vulson de la Colombière (1658 or 1665) or Sieur [Sir] de la Colombière was a French heraldist, histori…an, poet, minion of the royal court. His name is often spelled as Wulson and also as Volson. He published several highly successful books on symbols, heraldry, dreams etc. and put together all the available knowledge and traditions associated with chivalry. In the 17th century chivalry was practically rediscovered by two genealogists and sycophants in the French court: Colombière and Claude-François Ménestrier, after its golden age (11001400) and decline. First six plates have an old pale yellow wash applied.

Marc Vulson o Wilson, señor de La Colombière y caballero de la order de San Miguel, era un conocido heraldista, historiador y poeta. Fallecido en 1658, los numerosos detalles que ofrecen sus descripciones, así como el tratamiento sistemático de la disciplina heráldica, hacen que sus trabajos sean aún vigentes. Coronas, grabados de nobles a caballo (aparecen el duque de Bretaña, el de Bourbon y Aymon de Salvaing, señor de Boissieu), escudos. si el texto resulta interesante el complemento gráfico no le va a la zaga. A deluxe, beautifully illustrated ms heraldic manual, produced in France c.1660, based on the 'Science heroïque' (1644) of Marcus Vulson de La Colombière (d.1658). To him is attributed the invention of the hatching system of tinctures, as well as the rediscovery and adaptation of the image of chivalry which would greatly influence C19 medievalism. Selections from 'Science heroïque' - with slight variations probably dictated by the patron's taste - were crafted into this delightful reference book. Heraldry is the genre whereby the attraction and 'fetish' of the manuscript medium, and of hand-colouring, persisted longest into the age of print. The manual tackles the traditional heraldic matter, from the origins to the shields, the use of colours, quartering, impalement, patterns, emblems, charges, crests, crowns, and the rich vocabulary used to describe them. These are accompanied, mostly on facing pages, by hundreds of numbered shields illustrating specific examples. The sophistication and liveliness of the naturalistic devices (e.g., lions, goats, cockerels, wheels, fish bones, cats, dogs, devils, eagles, owls, bats, spiders, etc.) on numerous shields suggest the work of a skilled draftsman able to reproduce hundreds of printed illustrations faultlessly. Towards the end are the best drawings. These include 4 full-figure likenesses found on ancient monuments, explaining funeral heraldic symbolism (for princes, those who died in battle on the winning or the losing side, and those who died in prison), and two large equestrian portraits of Aymon de Salvaing (in 1505) and the Duc de Bourbon illustrating the medieval use of the 'lambrequin', a piece of cloth hanging from knights' helmets, rendered in heraldic terms as 'mantling'. The last few pages are devoted to French royal arms, and their sundry variations, with a dozen coats of arms sketched in pencil and left blank, as in the printed manual. A very attractive ms.
