Mabel Lucie Attwell (1879 -1964) was a British children's book illustrator known for her cute, nostalgic drawings of children. Her drawings were also featured on many postcards, advertisements, posters and figurines. Capt. Edric Vredenburg may be less known today; he was a thriller writer who turned to writing and editing books for the very young and used the name 'Father Tuck'.

Frontispiece missing but all of the eleven other divinely illustrated colour plates are present. Blue boards and backstrip handsomely adorned with gilt lettering and decorations. Front free endpaper removed. Title page loose but present. Hinges open. Binding weak. Despite its numerous considerable deficiences this copy retains substantial charm. Please note that the 10th plate appears at page 110 rather than page 114 as stated in the list of colour plates.

Wealthy on the front cover. The covers are slightly rubbed and soiled and the corners are bumped. [50] unnumbered pages, with a full-page color frontispiece by Louis Wain and 49 vignettes, 14 of which are colored or tinted. Of the 49 vignettes, 34 are signed "Louis Wain" in the print and 15 are unsigned. The title page vignette is by "E. Ledward". The front hinge is cracked and the pages are slightly darkened. An early owner's inscription, dated "1917" is penned on the front endpaper. Very good. First edition.Though not listed as one of the book's illustrators, the majority of the illustrations are by Louis Wain and most are amusing depictions of cats & kittens.[Raphael Tuck No. 823]. RARE.
