Early mottled calf; spines extensively tooled in gilt, with contrasting morocco lettering-pieces; sides bordered with gilt rolls; all edges gilt; spines tanned, with the leather now somewhat brittle; joints splitting (but sound); covers slightly worn; plates occasionally a little tanned; a few spots of foxing; loss to the corner of a few leaves (likely a production flaw, not affecting the text); a few minor signs of age and use, but internally a crisp, clean, wide-margined set in excellent condition, meriting a sympathetic restoration of the bindings. The 111 plates, illustrating scenes from English history from Roman times to the American War of Independence, are engraved by François-Anne David after designs by Nicolas Lejeune, Monet, and Gios. (The third volume, published after a hiatus of 16 years, has the extended title 'Histoire d'Angleterre, depuis la descente de Jules César jusqu'à la fin de la guerre d'Amérique'.) The tone is perhaps coloured by the rivalry between France and England, concluding '. l'Angleterre humiliée et vaincue recevoit le juste prix de sa tyrranie injuste et sanguinaire, par la perte entière d'une de ses colonies la plus importante, et les Etats-Unis de l'Amérique eurent une place marquée parmi les puissances libres et souveraines'. The 'Gazette nationale ou le Moniteur universel' for 5 November 1794 contains a lengthy advertisement for David's series of illustrated histories, indicating that the print run included a deluxe issue with the plates printed in 'bistre sanguin anglais' on wove paper; this set is from the standard issue printed in black ink. This first Danish translation of the consolidated "Newnes issue" of The World Crisis was originally published in 33 parts and available in two binding styles. Winston Churchill's account of World War I was first published as The World Crises (in six volumes) and completed in 1931. Biographer William Manchester references the book and notes that ".his masterpiece is The World Crises. Magnificently written, it is enhanced by the presence of the author at the highest councils of the war and in the trenches as a battalion commander.".

Solid text blocks, faint toning throughout, a near fine set. Original VHS tape of the 1996 film "The Proprietor," included in slipcase. Includes letter from Grace Bindery in Jacksonville, FL describing the alterations made to binding. Check showing payment from Merchant Ivory to Grace Bindery dated 1995 laid-in as well. All housed in blue cloth slipcase, lightly worn with some dust. The Proprietor (1996) tells the story of an expatriated French novelist who returns to Paris and discovers her childhood home is up for auction. The author in the story, Adrienne Mark, is the author listed on the rebound books included here. Adrienne Mark was portrayed by notable French actress Jeanne Moreau. The movie also features Sam Waterston, Nell Carter, Sean Young, and Christopher Cazenove. Originally from Devon, England, Alan and Maureen Grace relocated their bookbindery to Louisville, KY, with sponsorship from notable collector Armand Champa. Upon completing the rebinding of Champa's extensive library, the couple moved to Jacksonville, FL to continue their bookbinding business until Alan passed away in 2011.

There are occasional scholarly notes in pencil next to illustrated plates, could be removed if desired. Small holes in Volume 6, not directly impacting the illustrations. The work is considered incomplete without both works presented together, as they are here. Considered at its date of issue ".one of the most important of all Bird Books, both as a Fine Bird Book and a work of Ornithology." It remains one of the most important works.

Verney Lovett Cameron (1844-1894) was the first European to travel from one coast of equatorial Africa to the other. Across Africa details his expedition, with specific suggestions of how to open up the continent, including using the great lakes as a Cape to Cairo Road connection.
