First edition, first printing, inscribed in pencil "à Ralph Kirkpatrick pour 'les possibilités harmoniques' Roger Vieillard amicalement" inside the first blank, including two musical drawings, further drawings on the title page with the caption "pour Ralph Kirkparick" signed with Vieillard's "RV" monogram and dated "1942-1971-1982". This copy number 46 of 150 signed copies on Vélin d'Arches from a total edition of 186 copies. A selection of 12 poems by Arthur Rimbaud, exquisitely illustrated by Roger Vieillard (1907-1989). He was a banker who practised printmaking in his spare time, from 1935, at the influential workshop Atelier 17 in Paris, which was run by innovative British printmaker Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988). Also a music lover, he seems to have drawn inspiration from American musician, musicologist, and harpsichordist, Ralph Kirkpatrick (1911-1984), for whom Vieillard designed and etched the bookplate pasted to the chemise's front pastedown. Talking about Vieillard, Kirkpatrick notes that "my interest in prints and my sense of their affinities with the art which I practice led us rapidly to a close friendship". Library Hub locates eleven copies: seven in the US, two in France (BnF and Montpellier), and two in Scandinavia (Norway and Sweden). A rare and beautiful work, with a superb association. Guérin and Rault 108; Kirkpatrick, Ralph, "Reflections of an American Harpsichordist", 2017, p. 43. Quarto. Publisher's wrappers, titles in black and red on spine and front wrapper, loose sheets as issued, untrimmed. Housed in publisher's red cloth-backed grey paper-covered chemise with titles in gilt on spine, and matching slipcase. 12 full-page, and 5 smaller etchings by Roger Vieillard. A fine copy in the lightly spotted and rubbed chemise.
