Hardcover. Zustand: Good-. See photos for condition details. Large thick hardcover, this is volume 1 ONLY of the 1842 edition, which was published in two volumes. The exterior shows scuffing and spotting, with numerous chips and tears along the spine, edges and corners, which are also worn. The exterior is the only reason for the lower condition grade of good minus. The internal binding is good except for some pulling and spots. Pages do show various degrees of foxing, which can be also seen on the image of the title page. There are no bookplates or library markings, no torn or loose pages found. There is some handwriting: the front end page shows us who the original owners were, the inscription reads "Presented to George E. Hogg by his Mother and Father, July 31, 1843."". George Edwin Hogg (1815-1893) was from Pennsylvania and had several children, one of them was Nathaniel B. Hogg - whose signature is present on the title page. The rear end page shows a corner crease at the upper left, all remaining pages appear good. Please note: This is volume 1 only of a 2 volume set.

Hardback. Second edition. Vethake's Principles, one of the earliest systematic American economic treatises first published in 1838, was the closest of the period to the views of the English Ricardian school--"a good illustration of the transfer of classical economic inhibitions to the new continent.Vethake however attempted several innovations, notably broadening his concept of wealth to include services and that of capital to include intellectual products, and came close to approving the absorption of economic rent in taxes. His work also includes extensive sections on international trade and money and banking.Includes an essay 'Henry Vethake - Jacksonian Ricardian' by Joseph Dorfman and Rexford G. Tugwell. With B&W Frontispiece portrait of Henry Vethake. Good condition. Pages, spine, cover - sound, and binding firm. Foxing mainly first & last few pages. Small ding in front cover near hinge. Vitriolic letter signed by three of the four full-time professors who resigned from the University of the City of New York (i.e. NYU) following the mismanagement of the institution during the first two years of its existence. After Chancellor Mathews (referred to for the first time here simply as the "'Chancellor,'" quotation marks included) mortgaged university property and generally mettled too much in internal affairs, four of the five regular members of the faculty publicly resigned.
