Le général Walters est entré dans Rome avec le général Clark. Il a assisté à la rencontre de Truman et MacArthur dans l'île de Wake. Il était à Paris pour la conférence Kennedy-Khrouchtchev, etc, etc. Il a fini sa carrière comme directeur adjoint de la CIA. ? De 1941 à 1975, Vernon Walters poursuivit une carrière militaire brillante qui, du grade de simple seconde classe le mena à celui de général de corps d'armée et de conseiller particulier de cinq présidents américains : Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, John F. Kennedy et Gerald Ford. En 1942, il débarqua au Maroc avec le corps expéditionnaire américain et commença une extraordinaire carrière d'interprète en interrogeant les prisonniers français. Capable de parler plusieurs langues, il accompagna les présidents dans leurs déplacements à l'étranger, put ainsi rencontrer la plupart des dirigeants de cette époque (De Gaulle, Pompidou, Khrouchtchev, Tito, Franco, etc.) et participer aux négociations les plus secrètes comme celles devant mettre fin à la guerre du Viet-Nam ou celles permettant de renouer des relations diplomatiques avec la Chine. Il termina sa carrière comme directeur adjoint de la CIA à un moment crucial de son histoire, celui de l'affaire du « Watergate ». Une autobiographie et un témoignage de première main d'une grande franchise. Le général Walters fut un témoin privilégié qui se retrouva placé, grâce à ses talents de polyglotte, au centre névralgique des plus grandes affaires internationales de l'époque. Il nous fait partager une expérience unique des hommes et des évènements qui ont marqué l'histoire du vingtième siècle. Nous y découvrons la grande amitié qui régnait entre De Gaulle et Eisenhower, la fabuleuse mémoire de De Gaulle, les talents de comédien de Mossadegh, le courage de Nixon pris dans des émeutes à Lima et Caracas, la haine des Nord-Vietnamiens réclamant avec une froide détermination la tête du général Thieu etc, etc. ?

This is a bit puzzling to us; first of all, the signature definitely does not say VERNON Walters (but the 'v' in 'very' looks like the sort of distinctive 'v' that Walters used to sign his name. Two notes tucked inside the book itself note that the recipient was General Bernard William Rogers, Chief of Staff of the US Army and Supreme Allied Commander for NATO. Walters and Rogers were contemporaries and both at the height of their careers -- Walters was semi-retired and writing this book during the Carter administration, but would serve as US Ambassador to several countries during the Reagan Administration, including Ambassador to the UN. Rogers had just been appointed Supreme Allied Commander of NATO by President Carter. Still, we would feel better if we could figure out what SHAPE was and why Walters might have signed his name as 'Dine'. Please email with questions or to request photos.
