Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Edinburgh (English Language and Linguistics Department), course: Second Language Acquisition, language: English, abstract: This essay addresses a question which is central to input research, namely to what extent the quality of input has an effect on SLA, particularly on the learner's ability to comprehend. Thereby the term 'quality' shall be interpreted as referring to any impact of modified input and negotiated interaction that is not related to its amount or frequency. After a brief review of Krashen's Input Hypothesis, Long's Interaction Hypothesis and Swain's Comprehensible Output Hypothesis, I will then proceed to suggest ways in which Foreigner Discourse modifications might facilitate SLA. I shall also review a number of studies dealing with (un)modified input-SLA relationships, among which are Long's (1985) and Gass & Varonis' (1994) study. Due to the constraints imposed upon this essay, I will of course be drawing upon a very small selection of the pertinent literature.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1, University of Vienna, language: English, abstract: In this essay, I will be concerned with a topic that has encouraged much (highly interesting) discussion in the course Principles of ELT Methodology, namely FL/ESL/EFL extensive reading, a teaching/learning procedure which (more or less) corresponds to what has been called 'pleasure readig', 'sustained silent reading' (SSR), or 'uninterrupted sustained silent reading' (USSR) in L1 extensive reading. (Vaughan 1982: 69) I begin here by providing a brief definition of 'extensive reading' (section 2). I will then proceed to discuss the main differences between 'intensive' and 'extensive' reading (section 3). As extensive reading might best be explained as a set of principles, I will also refer to some of the principles offered by Day & Bamford (2004), which provide a theoretical framework for putting extensive reading into action in the language classroom. In sections 4 and 5, I will finally consider two aspects that I regard as the most significant ones for a successful application of an extensive reading programme, namely the question of whether the pupils should do some kind of feedback project on their reading, or just enjoy, and the role of the teacher.

M. Coetzee's Foe (1986), which is a rewriting of Daniel Defoe's literary classic Robinson Crusoe (1719). I shall deal with the intersection of postcolonialism and postmodernism in Coetzee's works, give (a) brief definition(s) of metafiction and consider the origins of this term and its general functions. I will finally take a rather detailed look at metafiction and the discourse of power in Coetzee's deconstruction of the Crusoe myth.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Seminar des 2. Studienabschnitts, language: English, abstract: This paper seeks to shed light upon Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' (1892) - a text that has become an American feminist classic and has been interpreted as a 'transformed autobiography' (Shulman, xix), as a 'journalistic/clinical account of a woman's gradual descent into madness' (Bak, 39), and in multiple ways as a 'critique of gender relations' (Shulman, xix). It is a 'bitter story', as Ann J. Lane describes it, 'of a young woman driven to insanity by a loving husband-doctor, who, with the purest motives, imposed Mitchell's 'rest cure'' (Lane, vii). The narrator of the story is diagnosed as suffering from a 'temporary nervous depression' (W, 4), which is today known as 'postpartum depression', that is, a depression caused by profound hormonal changes after childbirth. Written some five years after the author herself, following the birth of her first child, became 'a mental wreck' in need of a 'rest cure', 'The Yellow Wallpaper' is a fictionalized account of Gilman's own subjection to the rest cure of Silas Weir Mitchell, whose mode of treatment so notoriously typified conventional late Victorian doctoring of women .

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Lesson Plan from the year 2012 in the subject Didactics - English - Pedagogy, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Literature and ELT (Fachdidaktik-Kurs), language: English, abstract: Bei dieser Arbeit für den Fachdidaktik-Kurs 'Literature and ELT' handelt es sich um eine Didaktiksierung des Abenteuerromans 'Holes' von Louis Sachar (ab 4./5. Lernjahr) mit einigen außergewöhnlichen Ideen zu Übungen/Aktivitäten rund um 'Holes' (Dauer ca. 4 St.), welche auch auf andere literarische Werke angewandt werden können (creating wanted posters, telephone conversations with the author, .).Inhalt: Introduction: Why teach literature (or Literature ) in ELT; Choice of text; Work plan for four lessons; Conclusion; Bibliography; Appendix/Work sheets: 'dig it', character sketch, 'mad lib', discuss-decide-survive, filling in the holes: questions, create your own 'wanted poster', reading log.Auszug: Choice of textWe shouldn't teach great books; we should teach a love of reading. (B. F. Skinner)I have chosen the novel Holes by Louis Sachar with the quotation above in mind: even though it might not be classified as one of the 'great books', i.e. of '(high) Literature', it is definitely one of those books that can serve to 'teach a love of reading'.Holes is the exciting story of Stanley Yelnats (mind the palindrome!), an overweight boy who is unjustly sent to Camp Green Lake, a boys' juvenile detention centre. Stanley knows that this is due to a curse on his 'no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather', who did not fulfil a promise he had made to Madame Zeroni. At the camp, Stanley and six other boys are forced to dig holes every day in order to pay their debt to society. However, Stanley soon finds out that there is more than 'character building' going on [.].The novel and its main themes (friendship, racism, justice, fate, etc.) can be exploited in many appealing ways for classroom reading. [.] In the open learning sequence I have prepared, two basic approaches to reading a book in class are incorporated. First, there is the 'classical' approach with its well-established, successful activities, whereby the focus of assessment is (as is usual on an upper-secondary level) on both language and content. On the other hand, the activities on the second work sheet focus on the themes dealt with in the book. Since friendship, bullying, racism, etc. are issues in (nearly) every teenager's life, it can be motivating for the students to deal with these topics from a personal point of view, in a creative way. The activities on both work sheets are designed in a way that allows the students to plan which tasks to do when themselves.
