In zijn boek weet Vennik op toegankelijke en historisch verantwoorde wijze de geschiedenis van de periode tussen 180 en 476 na Christus te schetsen. Hierbij besteed hij ook bijzondere aandacht aan de opmerkelijke verhalen en anekdotes over keizers en andere personen die de laat-Romeinse geschiedenis hebben gekleurd. (.) Vennik kiest voor het jaar 180 omdat in dit symbolische jaar Gibbon zijn standaardwerk startte en de Pax Romana bovendien in dat jaar eindigde. Daarbij is er op de middelbare school vaak juist alleen aandacht voor de periode voor 180 en wordt er vaak kort door de bocht geschetst dat het na 180 alleen maar bergafwaarts ging met het Romeinse Rijk. in zijn boek laat Vennik zien dat het niet direct slecht ging met het grote rijk. Vennik eindigt in 476, het jaar dat vaak wordt genoemd als het einde van het Romeinse Rijk en tevens het jaar van de gepensioneerde tiener keizer, hij was de laatste keizer van het westen: Romulus Augustulus.' Different modes of excitation are used in electron emission spec troscopy. The electron-solid scattering is covered in detail by C. B. Duke, from a theoretical point of view. Elastic and inelastic low energy electron diffraction are extensively discussed in relation to the geometrical, electronic and vibronic structure of solid surfaces. Auger electron emission spectroscopy (AES) is covered by J. C. Tracy. The tech nique is discussed from the point of view of surface research. This part also contains a complete literature list concerning the application of AES up to the middle of 1972. Electron emission produced by X-ray impact, is covered by C. S. Fadley, D. T. Clark, R. P. Gupta and S. K. Sen. The contribution by C. S.
