Evgeny Pavlovich Velikhov (born on February 2, 1935) is a physicist and scientific leader in the Russian Federation. His scientific interests include plasma physics, lasers, controlled nuclear fusion, power engineering and magnetohydrodynamics (high-power pulsed MHD generators). He is the author of over 1500 scientific publications and a number of inventions and discoveries. He held the post of president of the Kurchatov Institute and first Secretary (head) of the Public Chamber of Russia. He is a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and has been the vice-president of the Soviet Academy of Sciences. Leading Soviet and American scientists delivered their conclusions at a seminar at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in the Vatican in 1984. This book covers the main research on the subject by the Soviet scientists conducted under the auspices of the Soviet Scientists' Committee for the Defense of Peace Against Nuclear Threat. The scientists' conclusion is clear and unambiguous: the use of even a fraction of the nuclear arsenal that exists in the world would result in a 'nuclear night' and 'nuclear winter' which would ultimately cause unprecedented global ecological disaster.
