Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First American edition. Translated from the Greek by Edmund and Mary Keeley. Octavo. 272 [2] pp. Boards just a bit splayed, near fine in a lightly worn, near fine dust jacket with a short tear at the crown. Inscribed by Vassilikos on the front fly: "To George Cooke, my friend and angel-guardian, from Vassilis." In June, 1965, Cooke loaned this copy to Farrar, Straus & Giroux publisher Robert Giroux, at the request of author Jean Stafford. Both Cooke's Typed Letter that accompanied the book and Giroux's Typed Letter Signed in response, are laid in (old folds and a bit of rippling near an old paperclip impression, near fine). Giroux thanks Cooke for the loan and writes that he read "enough of it (the first novella) to learn that he is a very fine writer indeed, and I am getting a copy of the book for myself. ." Giroux also notes that he had the opportunity to meet the author on the day the letter was written, June 24, 1965. FSG would publish the American edition of Vassilikos' novel *Z* in 1968.

First American edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original black cloth. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Matthew with my love, Vassilis Vassilikos 5.05.01." Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket that shows very light wear. Jacket design by Enrico Arno. Translated from the Greek by Marilyn Calmann. Z was published in Greece in 1966, and banned there one year later. It is based on an actual political assassination in 1963 in Salonika. The victim was Gregory Lambrakis, a socialist legislator and outspoken critic of the government. But Lambrakis's killers could not have anticipated the public response. His funeral became a political event; by the time the cortege reached Athens, 400,000 people were following the coffin in silence. In the nation's capital, the letter Z suddenly appeared on walls, sidewalks, posters--everywhere. Z stands for the Greek verb zei, "he lives." It is the basis for the award-winning film, starring Yves Montand and Irene Pappas and directed by Costa Gavras.
