Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1. Scope, methodology and three surveys. 2. Three decades of development: analysis of land and labour relations. 3. Strategies for sustenance: farm and non-farm activities. 4. The farmers speak: profiles from the field. 5. The Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Andhra Pradesh State: an empirical case study of a village in Telangana. 6. Case study of the manufacturing industry-PENNAR. Conclusions. This book focuses on gender precariousness in the wake up of socio economic and institutional transition of the life and livelihoods of female labour from different communities, classes and castes. The study seeks to answer the basic question as to what happens to women's work and status if a village in which they are mostly employed in agriculture, undergoes a transition to industrial and other new non-farm activities. This study tracks changes in agriculture beginning with land use, changes in the share of area cultivated, cropping pattern, the choice of agricultural technology in terms of gender specific labour use and relatively low female wages. The second issue relates to the basic changes in the village due to the macro policy shifts and institutional changes at the national level. The imposition of the neo liberal regime in which private profit seeking activities across all sectors including health and education, witnessing an 'increase' in 'commodification' of farm land and influential role of speculators and minimized state's role. These changes have far reaching implications for opportunity structure for rural women. It is in this broad narrative of changes the book analyses changes in working status of women based on the field data collected between the first and last survey in thirty years span, the land under cultivation shrunk drastically from1973acres in 1979t to 926acres in 1995-96 to just 349acres in 2009-10. The paddy cultivation in this village supported by irrigation sources was the main crop and highly female labour intensive. There was hardly any alternative mechanism that could absorb female labour in other than cultivating activities. From 1980s with the entry of industrial activity and acquisition of a part of farm land, steep rise in land prices led to increasing diversion of farm land for non-farm purposes. These changes caused decline in female employment and also deskilled them. In addition to loss of agricultural work women also lost traditional non-farm activities like, wool cleaning spinning. The displaced female labour not willing to take up menial jobs offered by industries catapulted productive work to domestic work. In this scenario, state initiated SGSY (SHG), the field survey found that the loan facility to SHG led to increase in consumption expenditure instead of providing economic security. The SHG scheme was followed by MFI (which charged interest up to 75per cent) hit adversely the vulnerable female headed families. The study was also extended to a modern manufacturing industry to track the working and living conditions of women which revealed much of de skilling even in modern industry. The entire development pattern does not hold any promise for creating conditions where female labour could gain dignity, security, not to talk of equality.

Summary:The Life of Harishchandra, Raghavanka's thirteenth-century masterpiece, is the first poetic rendering of one of ancient India's most enduring legends. When his commitment to truth is tested by a powerful sage, King Harishchandra suffers utter deprivation--the loss of his wife and son, his citizens and power, and, dearest of all, his caste status--but refuses to yield. The tale has influenced poets and readers through the ages. Mahatma Gandhi traced his own commitment to truth to the impact of a Harishchandra play seen in childhood. A poet from northern Karnataka trained in the twin traditions of Sanskrit and Kannada, Raghavanka negotiates a unique space for himself in the Kannada literary canon through important thematic, formal, and stylistic innovations. The conflicts he addresses--of hierarchical social order, political power, caste, and gender--are as relevant to contemporary India as to his own times. Accompanied by the original text in the Kannada script, this spirited translation, the first into any language, brings an elegant and energetic narrative to a global readership.-- Provided by publisher.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Set in the stately, forest-clad hills of Malnad in the Western Ghats during the late nineteenth century, Bride in the Hills tells the love stories of young men and women aspiring for a life of freedom, dignity and fulfilment in marriage within a caste-ridden social order. Kuvempu's multi-centred text, with its organic weave of varied narrative strands, much like the Mahabharata, is epic in substance and style. The novel, which is rooted in the regional realities of Malnad, is yet another example of the diversity of modern Indian literature. Kuvempu (1904-94) chronicles the emergence of a vibrant and complex rural society caught between manipulative colonial norms and discriminatory native practices. Bringing in the distinct experiences of the Shudra lifeworld, he led Kannada literature to great heights with his profound and poetic writing. Kuvempu's cosmic vision of vishva manava (universal man), which transcends narrow, sectarian boundaries, constitutes a precious legacy in the ethical traditions of the world. This epic novel with the sweep of a Tolstoy classic enacts its mission statement: 'Here, nobody is important; nobody is unimportant; nothing is insignificant!' with brilliance, energy and imaginative power.

Hardbound. Zustand: As New. New. Aquatic Oligochaetes are very common micro invertebrates in small medium and large fresh water bodies and running waters of streams and rivers living in algae aquatic vegetation floating rotting material and in bottom mud. Dr. Stephenson published several papers on the aquatic and terrestrial Oligochaetes of India and published the Fauna of British India volume on Oligochaetes in 1923. Later Dr. Padmmabha Aiyer published some papers on aquatic Oligochaetes collected around Trivandrum from 1925 1929. Dr. Mehra published some papers on this group from collections made in and around Agra from 1922 1929. K. Vanamala Naidu published some papers mainly on South Indian fresh water Oligochaetes from 1959 1986. Worms belonging to the family Naididae is well represented in the Indian subcontinent but those of family Tubificidae living in bottom mud of water sources are ill represented in this subcontinent while they are well represented in Europe and other parts of the world. This short coming in this region should be filled by future researches. Many areas in this subcontinent need extensive and intensive exploration for discovering more species of these Oligochaetes. Present work gives methods of collection anatomical section dealing with internal anatomy diagnoses of order families subfamilies and genera and detailed description of species their habits distribution in India and world with figures for each of 102 taxa of Aeolosomatidae Naididae Tubificidae Enchytraeidae Phreodrilidae Lumbriculidae and Microchaetidae covered here. It is hoped that this work will be very useful in understanding the basic diversity of aquatic Oligochaetes and inspire further research in this field in unexplored and underexplored regions of the subcontinent. This book deserves a place on the library shelf of all research and academic institutions of higher learning in this country and elsewhere. 294 pp.
