In den WarenkorbFolio (210 x 317 mm). (4), 120 pp. With woodcut device to title-page, a folding letterpress genealogical table, 2 large woodcuts (plus 1 repeat) with letterpress text and a loosely inserted errata leaf. Modern half morocco over marbled boards, bound to period style by Courtland Benson, spine prettily gilt with red morocco title label. First edition of a history of the Mogul Empire and its southern possessions. The foreword notes that the anonymous author based his account of northern India partly on François Valentijn's history of the Dutch East Indies, "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indiën" (1724-26), but that he made many additions and corrections. For the southern regions, however, he turned to natives familiar with their antiquities ("ervarene inlanders in hare oudheden"). The addenda leaf, loosely inserted at the end of this copy, is often lacking. The woodcut circles, on pp. 33, 36 and 39 represent seals of the Mogul rulers Eurangzeeb, Prince Mohamed Azem and finally Mahomed Sjah (1719-48), each with two concentric circles and 11 or 13 smaller circles in between, with the ruler's name in the centre and his predecessors numbered in the surrounding circles. The book includes information on the Moguls' relations with the Persians, Afghans and others and comments on the silk trade. - The Mogul Empire was an imperial power that ruled most of the Indian subcontinent from the early 16th to the mid-19th century. At the height of its power, around 1700, it controlled most of the subcontinent and parts of what is now Afghanistan. After 1725 the empire declined rapidly. - This was Renhard's most ambitious work as printer to the VOC at Batavia. It is mostly well printed from freshly cast type and gives an excellent overview of the printing office's materials, primarily 17th-century Dutch roman and italic types, showing the considerable expansion of the stock of the press in the preceding years. - Folding table slightly browned; a small hole in one leaf and a small marginal tear fol. A1, but generally in fine condition, with generous margins and including the errata leaf. - Bijdragen tot de taal-, land- en volkenkunde van Nederlandsch-Indie LIX (1906), pp. 374-376. The important Dutch controlled island Ambon, with an inset of "Het Casteel Victoria met de Ring - Muur", which accompanied Rumphius's lost manuscript 'Amboinsch Dierboek', published in Valentyn's 'Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien, vervattende een Naaukeurige en Uitvoerige Verhandelinge van Nederlands Mogentheyd in die Gewesten', two volumes, an account of the history of the Dutch empire in Asia. Ambon was the headquarters of the VOC between 1610 and 1619, and a principal Dutch settlement in the Spice Islands, and regional administrative headquarters of the VOC in Fort Victoria, throughout the nearly 200 years of its reign. In 1605, the VOC had wrested the island from the Portuguese, creating a centre for their Southeast Asian operations from 1610-1619, until they founded Batavia. "The VOC succeeded in acquiring the clove, mace and nutmeg cultivation in the Moluccas and in exercising a worldwide monopoly over these products. The intention was to concentrate the cultivation of cloves on a small number of easily controllable islands on the Ambon archipelago and to destroy the trees elsewhere in the Moluccas as far as possible. From Victoria Castle on Ambon, the VOC exercised its authority over the surrounding islands. On the large islands of Buru and Seram, the Dutch influence remained mostly limited to the coastal regions. Lontor, Bandaneira, Run, Ai and Rozengain in the southern Moluccas were the only producers of mace and nutmeg. It was on these islands that Jan Pietersz. Coen wreaked a gruesome havoc in 1621 and had nearly the entire indigenous population murdered or driven away. The rivalry with the English reached its peak in 1623 when, based on a rumor of a conspiracy against the Dutch, all of the Englishmen on the island of Run were put to death. The massacre was the source of much friction between the Netherlands and England for a long time after, but it did put an end to the English influence in the Moluccas. From that time onward, the two mighty forts of Belgica and Nassau protected the VOC's mace and nutmeg monopoly. After the bloody conquest, the VOC established a plantation on the Banda islands. "The policy of the VOC was directed at safeguarding the monopolies of Ambon and Banda islands. In order to achieve this goal, the Dutch had also established themselves in the northern Moluccas. The felling of the wild nutmeg and clove trees, for which the Dutch concluded contracts with the indigenous sovereigns, was overseen from Fort Oranje on Ternate" (Schilder, page 52). Francois Valentyn (1666-1727), a minister who devoted most of his life to the employ of the VOC, is responsible for publishing a comprehensive cartography of Southeast Asia. As a young man, in 1685, he was sent by the VOC to Ambon as a Minister to the East Indies, where he remained for a decade. In 1705, the now married Valentyn, and father of five children, returned to the Indies with his family. The following year he was Army Chaplain on an expedition in eastern Java, but suffered health problems and requested permission to return to Holland. This was denied, however, and he remained in the East until 1714. Finally, back home, Valentyn composed his monumental work, 'Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien', which was published between 1724 and 1726. The 'Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien' was created both from the voluminous journals Valentyn had amassed during his two stays in Southeast Asia, as well as from his own research, correspondence, and from previously unpublished material secured from the VOC officials. The work contained an unprecedented selection of large-scale maps and views of the Indies, many of which were superior to previously available maps. VIEW OF SOMBA OPU, DUTCH EAST INDIA COMPANY TRADING POST "Samboepo in plattegrond" copper engraving from François Valentijn's "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien", made by Jan van Braam and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size.: 36,1 x 27,4 cm. Fortress Somba Opu was the commercial capital of Makassar (Sulawesi, Indonesia). In the 1630s, kings and nobles established their residence in Somba Opu, staying in a house built on thick pillars. A number of detached houses were located in rear (east) and northern side of the fort. They were grouped around the royal complex in the southwest side of Somba Opu, which consisted of two enormous wooden palaces, storehouses, and a mosque. Outside Somba Opu fort were two major markets each to the north and south, and houses of the commoners. The quarters of the Portuguese, the Indians, and some European factories were located along the north coast. Somba Opu fell into Dutch hands in 1669. The Dutch text under the bird's-eye view of the town is interesting. It reads e.g. that the walls of the fortress are poorly maintained and that they would not withstand a canon shot or even a wooden ram. François Valentijn was a prominent historian of the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.) who is best known for "Oud en Nieuw Oost Indiën", his vast illustrated account of the Dutch trading empire in Asia. He travelled to the East Indies twice and served as Calvinist minister to Ambon between 1686 and 1694. In preparing this monumental work, he was given privileged access to the previously secret archives of the V.O.C., containing transcripts and copies of important earlier Dutch voyages. While Valentijn's maps and diagrams were prized possessions, his scholarship, judging by 21st century standards was unscrupulous. Valentyn's use of the products of other scientists' and writers' intellectual labour and his passing it off as his own, reveals a penchant for self-aggrandisement. Price: Euro 350,-.

VOC TRADING POST IN CAMBODIA "Eauweck, Hoofdstad van Cambodia" [Eauweck, Capital of Cambodia], copper engraving from François Valentijn's "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien", made by Jan van Braam after a drawing by Johannes Vingboons and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 35 x 28 cm. The city of Lauweck (also Loveck, Lawec or Khum Peam Lvek) in Cambodia is located on the Mekong River, near Phnom Penh and Oudong (or Udong), the old capital. As early as 1609, the VOC occasionally sailed from Patani to Cambodia to buy, among other things, deer and rye skins that were in great demand in Japan. Even after the Dutch East India Company founded a factory [trading post] in 1620, trade was nevertheless disappointing and it was closed again two years later. After that, a post was opened three more times in Lauweck. In 1667 the VOC left Cambodia permanently. In addition to deer and rye skins, the VOC in Cambodia mainly bought food for Batavia, such as rice, butter, salted pork and lard. Also Benzoin resin, lacquer, ivory and gold were also obtained. In return, mainly cotton fabrics were supplied. Lauweck was not a busy trading place. Most of the population lived on agriculture.
